Oh, well… 😉

I think I saw a recommendation from, I think, John, to try a mixture of SAE 140 and grease?

I certainly don’t like the idea of using a graphited lubricant in any marine application

An American friend uses this stuff, which seems ideal:

Re: First steps with a 102

Thank you Charles. Indeed - mild steel with good quality chrome plating. I have not tried peering into the gearbox yet but I assume that whatever was in it forty years ago is long gone! Peering into earlier threads I found a recommendation to use stern seal oil. Big ship stern seal oils have changed...

Re: First steps with a 102

Thanks for the further insights! Cross purposes… by “keeping it original” I meant “not repainting it, etc.” I hope to bring it back to something like the state it was in when it left Poole, but I do intend to use it, so an “oily rag” restoration! I had a surprise as I removed further layers of crud,...

Re: First steps with a 102

Thank you! I am at the start of a very steep learning curve and I am going to need lots of help. I think it’s in a condition where a full rebuild is in order - it can be a restoration but it is past the point where “keeping it original” is practical. The top of the flywheel is flat. I can’t see any ...

Re: First steps with a 102

If I am going to do a proper job on this, I am going to have to get the leg and the exhaust pipe re-chromed. I assume that the Villiers coil is long dead, and I am watching Amal two jet carburettor videos. Correction: there are three grease nipples: https://i.postimg.cc/xTyFBJ5L/E5-E7-A8-D4-07...

First steps with a 102

I am starting to become addicted. Having a perfectly nice 40 Plus, I wondered if I were up to the challenge of restoring an early 102, and I have just acquired C.1912, from 1946, which has spent the last forty years on the floor of a garage. https://i.postimg.cc/9Q36ZHMQ/4-F67-C94-D-9-F79-47-B6-A53-...

Re: Which Seagull goes here?

All sorted. She gets a Forty Plus, and Charles has very kindly pointed me at the rest of the bracket.

What a fine place this bulletin board is! :P

Re: Which Seagull goes here?

That is extremely helpful, John.

If Charles and I don’t manage to get in touch with each other I will phone you in business hours and ask for his number.

Re: Which Seagull goes here?

Alas, no, but we can probably secure one in exchange for beer tokens. We do have a Forty Plus... best left in place rather than manhandled across the rather narrow and tippy after deck...

Re: Which Seagull goes here?

Thanks. It looks like the “Seagull Auxiliary Bracket” went there.

We have towed her using a Forty Plus so I reckon a Forty Plus will move her in a calm and in anything more than F1 she sails like a witch!

Which Seagull goes here?

Squib. 19ft keelboat.

Not a lot of freeboard.

Standard shaft Forty Plus or short shaft Century? With clutch?

Re: Comments On: Buying a British Seagull...

The very simplest advice is : “Is the chrome on the leg intact? If it is, the engine has not had much use, and is probably OK”.
