Re: Silver Century suitable for 2.3m inflatable?

The video illustrates my earlier point about your speed above the hull speed being pretty much dictated by how much noise you can stand - throttle back and enjoy the ride :) - although as I mentioned it's nice to have that extra thrust to plant it in the water, if you hit some weather and strong win...

Re: Silver Century suitable for 2.3m inflatable?

I think a 40 will work great, you'll hit your hull speed easily enough. One thing to take care of is not getting an oily mess all over your boat, the marks don't like to come off too easily, if at all in some cases. I used the Amsoil synthetic oil in mine that helped no end as it almost immediately ...

Re: Silver Century suitable for 2.3m inflatable?

I appreciate I'm late to the party, but I have some experience with Seagulls and an inflatable boat. Mine is a 3.1 meter boat. I've used it quite a bit with my 90 motor on it. It pushes it along well enough, but no Seagull is going to get you on the plane, so you are pretty much doing hull speed, pl...

Re: seagulls in the movies ??

That's the one, interesting there is a camshaft on the bench too, with only 2 strokes in sight :)

Re: seagulls in the movies ??

Watched "The Man Who Lost his Head" starring Martin Clunes the other evening. Set in New Zealand there was a scene with a boat in the background with an older Mercury 100hp or so on a boat and in the foreground a Seagull outboard lying across a table. It had a 5 blade Prop couldn't tell th...

Re: brussels at it again?

In the US the exaggeration kept being used that 2 strokes emitted up to 30% of their fuel unburned through the exhaust in the justification for banning them. When that sort of information is going round from a supposed reliable source then you can expect some dirty looks from some on boat ramps in c...

Re: brussels at it again?

The sale of new conventional 2 stroke outboards has been banned in the USA for quite a few years, I think it was 2006. Unless your motor has a 2006 EPA sticker there are also some places you can't use any other motor, mostly in CA. Direct injection 2 strokes are compliant and popular because they ar...

Re: The Great Gas Cap Search

Ebay should locate a fuel cap. I have a spare plastic 70's one you could borrow if there's a quick way to get it to Canada in time for your trip. As for the SAE 140 here in the US there is plenty available in Farm/Agricultural stores. I don't know what equipment uses it still on the farm, but I boug...

Re: Great Period Photo of Seagull

I always wondered why those exposed Flywheels were so popular and now I know why they are referred to as "exposed" Flywheels :) This was the main picture for a listing for a Seagull Handbook on Ebay, although once I overcame the distraction and looked at the motor in detail I could see it'...

Re: TC-W3 Oil

I definitely think at 8 or 10:1 ratio the sheer quantity of oil ensures adequate lubrication pretty much regardless of the oil used. I don't believe using the cheapest TC-3W oil is a problem either, there may be less wear with a "better" oil but to measure any difference would require seri...

Re: TC-W3 Oil

Despite the common sense and reasoning behind any TC-3w oil being fine, it's still tempting to go with one of the more exotic flavors just because the lube might be better and the actual reduced smell and smoke, in my experience . With one quart/liter of oil giving you 50-60 hours of use, in the wor...

Re: TC-W3 Oil

i've been using ROCK tcw-3 for a while now (semi-synthetic) and it seems pretty good stuff to me. the "old dears" dont seem too worried. seems to emulsify quite quickly and break down in water which is good from an environmental point. jon That's pretty much my thoughts on using the semi ...

Re: TC-W3 Oil

Well they all have to submit to testing to get the classification for their oil,so they all should be OK. Interestingly Amsoil outboard oil has not completed the test despite being highly rated by everyone using it. I don't know which manufacturers oils are available in the UK, here it's pretty easy...

Great Period Photo of Seagull

I recently bought a used Sportyak to use on my mountain property that has a small lake. While trying to find a picture of the centre seat I came across this photo of one sporting a Seagull motor, something I recall seeing back in the day. I thought some of you would enjoy seeing it. I don't think I'...

Re: TC-W3 Oil

My personal opinion is that with the volume of oil being run through the motor with 10:1 or 25:1 ratios, as long as the oil is a reputable brand of TC-3 there's nothing to worry about from a mechanical standpoint. However for environmental reasons, if this concerns you, there is a case for running s...
