Re: Rusty spark plug removal
I think 3/16, 1/4 and 5/16 whitworth spanners are the ones I regularly use across all types of seagulls. Sockets in same sizes also helpful (both standard and deep sockets are handy if that’s an option) For the flat head screw at base of the leg, if it’s the recessed one between the pipes an impact ...

Re: Rusty spark plug removal
Never count a seagull out! Any visible cracks in the cylinder? Do the flywheel/prop still turn? Have you checked ignition/coil? Multimeter will confirm coil condition (see SOS site for details) but the Wipac MK2’s have generally held up well. Villiers carbs almost always work with a proper servicing...

Re: Rusty spark plug removal
Welcome to the forum! Many ways to get a rusty plug out, depending on what your goals are and condition of motor. Photos and/or serial numbers are very helpful in suggesting an approach. Are you hoping to restore mechanically or cosmetically or both? Generally speaking, soaking with penetrating oil ...

Re: Baring back to life 2 Centuries downunder
Hi Aircobra, welcome to the forum. In the cooling system the only steel/iron touched by saltwater is inside the cylinder cooling passages. The other steel exposure to water are the portions of the drive shaft and drive shaft tube that sits underwater, as you pointed out. The bottom of drive shafts (...

Re: AD2710
Yes I was thinking about that Charles.
If piston is high enough in the cylinder that it covers all the ports, a grease nipple could do the job of moving the piston the all important first few mm.

Re: AD2710
Piston rod cut? Sometimes the only way!
Looks like piston is stuck in there pretty good. Hopefully a bit of soaking and some elbow grease get it out. Can be a tricky job on the single piece 102 cylinders!

Re: British Seagull 2 models
Yes the stator pulley plate (piece that a rope wraps around) and the flywheel cover plate should come off after removing the main nut. They’re often stuck on with crust on older motors like yours. Stator pulley plate should come off easily enough and is a sturdy piece. But the flat cover plate below...

Re: AD2710
Looks quite complete and surprisingly clean, albeit sounds as if a bit worse for wear  When you say smoke comes out of the block split, do you mean it runs?! Amazing if so. Is that some sort of shield around the carb air intake? Can’t quite tell in the photo. I haven’t noticed these two screws ...

Re: British Seagull 2 models
Look like great motors, good find.
Do you want to get them running again? Or just cleaned up?

Great to hear another seagull is brought back to life!
I hope you get to use it on the water sometime soon.

Re: About to start 45 Featherweight after 35 years —gear oil question
Indeed I noticed in my picture that the throttle cable is (incorrectly) threaded through the handle. No idea why I would have done that, probably rushing to put it back together after I used the carb to test another motor. As Charles points out this will kink the cable over time, and it also somewha...

Re: About to start 45 Featherweight after 35 years —gear oil question
Looks like EF129A4 to me! Interestingly the SOS engine identifier struggles with that serial number, date code (A4) suggests Jan ‘84 but EF model range indicated at 1985-1989. Sometimes the serial number stamps aren’t exact, they were done by hand I believe. Perhaps Charles or another member can chi...
