The steel plates are used between cylinder and crank case, and also as a head gasket. These were fitted to the little 40 engines only, so early F, (Only a few known) FV, FVP and LS engines in particular. They are a 1970s accessory, not made by seagull. It's called a "Rotogull" They do have a tendency to seize up I've heard.

That's a really interesting find, not many of those BMB inboards about. I have an outboard version similar to that, which I bought for spares, but is actually complete, still in its box.
I'd agree its worth cleaning out the water jacket, the cylinders are a weak spot for corrosion.

Like the way you have preserved the tank. I was thinking of doing the same with my very original HSD. Just giving the tank a wash and a couple of thin coats of lacquer.

The two brackets you have are basically the same however it should not be painted.

Don't put grease in the lower unit, it will result in little or no lubrication to the gears and pinion bush. If you put 140 grade oil in and fill it to just below the level of the prop shaft it will be fine.

When you reply to a post, just below and to the left of the submit button is a tab marked "Attachments" click on it and there is a "Add files" button. You can use that to add photos.

Another option is to take a thinner gear oil such as 90 grade and mix in some general purpose grease in to thicken it a bit.

If you look around you will find in the US for sure. These parts are often common sizes used in different applications. You can even make your own from thick gasket material.
