Re: 79 Forty plus, clutch, long shaft
The " blue metal" you show is the size and sharpness we get if we order driveway gravel or drain rock ( drain rock for house foundation drains, goes around the perforated black plastic pipe.) The stuff on your driveway would be under the gravel we use, it would be called pit run sand or pi...

Re: 79 Forty plus, clutch, long shaft
Would be good if at least some were sharper, the smallest 4 look the right size. They need to have good clearance from the filler hole as they need to come out of there as well. Could easily break some up with a 6 lb. hammer, put them in a strong but flexible bag and a couple of good shots with the ...

Re: 79 Forty plus, clutch, long shaft
Adrian, that is why we usually say driveway gravel, it appears that it means the same thing here (Canada) as in the U.K. Here it is small crushed hard rock usually 3/4" and smaller diameter, at times it is what we call pea gravel which is around 3/8" dia. rounded stone. The 3/4" crush...

Re: serial numbers for a 102
To do a nice job of the gearbox it needs to come apart, get the rear cover off, screws out, prop off, tap on prop shaft gently to help the rear cover come off. Loosen screws of any rings behind prop outside the front cover. Remove screws in outside of front cover. Tap off by tapping on rear of props...

Sounds like you were lucky on the tank then. Brass so much better, even if you are not a brass polisher.

Re: 79 Forty plus, clutch, long shaft
Can't tell from the photos whether the tank is brass or steel, either way, now that it is off, remove the fuel tap if it is still attached. Get some driveway gravel about a cupful that is small enough to put in tank through fuel cap hole, stick a rag or cork in the fuel tap hole, put some dish soap ...

Re: Nuts! I Purchased a Truck!
I suppose there is not a replacement gear for the rear end, to bring the highway speed up to an acceptable level, I imagine you would have mentioned that or a possible 2 speed rear axle? Any truck overdrive units that that could be cut into the drive line. It did sound as though the driving got kind...

Re: Still Going Strong!
The photo of the Hemlock came through here in he text. You are probably aware of this but Hemlock throws sparks while it is burning so should used in a closeable stove or heater and caution used when opening or closing the door. Not much hardwood on the beach if any,up that way I suspect. I lived on...

Re: Props A Discussion
I agree with Bruce, the OMC 2 blade weedless is the only truly weedless lower unit and prop. I have come across. The best I have been able to do for a Seagull is a piece of Stainless welding rod mounted ahead of the impeller intake, at least it allows a good cooling water inflow most of the time. Ot...

Re: Average Age Of Seagull Ownership???
I will be 69 in January, got my first Seagull a 40+ about 2002. Started collecting Seagulls in 2007, and North American outboards as well. Seagulls now make up about 25% of the collection and number about 10 not including parts motors. The others are from 1914 - to the mid-sixties. Not Seagulls. I'v...

Re: Single Handed Flywheel Removal
If it's not on extremely tight, back off flywheel nut a few turns, grab just above L/U, and using the motor's weight, gently drop on a hard even surface like concrete or steel. Works quite well. If it does not come off easily go to another method. Also may not be advisable if you are a person who ca...

If you go to AOMCI.org, in the ask a member forum section you will see a recent posting called Thread lost? With my name on it. It is a discussion of what is required for the best results when substituting a modern condenser for the original, probably a little more than many of us realized was neces...

Re: Mk1 Ignition system
I've used the 0.20 mfd 600volt Sprague orange drop capacitor in the Mk1 magneto. It is readily available and as I recall less than $1. It was used in an AC model 102 that I had since it was rebuilt from parts about 6 years ago. The nice thing about the Mk1 ignition is there is plenty of space where ...
