Bantams and Seagulls seem to go together. Just to prove the point, here is a photo of my good self, off to school, on my first registed motorcycle. The photo was taken in 1971.

Re: A Pair of Forties
The gearbox for the featherweight that I ordered on EBay from the UK arrived. Disassembly revealed that the crown and pinion gears showed no wear and there was no play between the propeller shaft and bushes. Very pleased with this purchase. With a coat of paint, the gearbox looks like new. The end c...

Re: A Pair of Forties
I measured the old rotor and compared against the one from the featherweight. No difference that I could see. When I reassembled the pump, I moved the rotor closer to the flange gasket. This did the trick, and pump started working. I think that the problem was that the rotor was a little loose on th...

Re: A Pair of Forties
Thanks for the tip, but the prop was off when the motor was run, so nothing that simple. I'll measure the old rotor today and see how it compares with the spec. of a new one. There is some visible wear on the blade tips.

Re: A Pair of Forties
I took the head of the Seagull without damage. It is surprising how much a little heat helps with this. The cooling passages weren't too bad. There was some "mud" in the passages but no major blockages from rust. I scraped out the muck from the water passages and blew what was left out wit...

Re: A Pair of Forties
The forty plus is starting to take shape. It started on the second pull (nearly on the first) and ran smoothly. Unfortunately, there was no water coming out of the head. I thought that maybe I hadn't lined up the water delivery pipe but that checked out OK. The impeller is in reasonable condition, a...

Re: A Pair of Forties
I decided that the stuck drive tube on forty plus wasn't going to beat me, so tried again to separate it. I finally got it apart. This is the method that worked for me. 1. Cleaned out the inside of the drive tube using a pice of thick wire and copious amounts of petrol. 2. Cleaned the outside of the...

What colour is a Seagull's leg?
I've tried to match the paint colour of the seagull's lower unit using various off-the shelf colours which are available in spray cans. The silver I bought didn't come close (too bright) nor did the can of aluminium spray. I noticed that the original grey colour of the lower unit was pretty close to...

Re: 40 minus will not start
The compressed air resistance theory sounds good but is not quiet right. In reality, the resistance of air is so high, it is practicaly infinite. The spark plug works because of the dielectric property of air called the breakdown voltage. This is the voltage at which an electric arc will start. This...

Re: A Pair of Forties
As I'm waiting on a few bits and pieces for the forty plus before I can start reassembly, I decided to start on the featherweight. Amazingly, the nuts and bolts holding it together offered nowhere near the resistance of the forty plus. I managed to dissasemble it in a couple of hours compared with t...

Re: Roys next build will be a Silver Century ?
I agree with Charles about the century cylinders. I bought 2 silver century models at the same time as I aquired my 102. Both had rusted cylinders with one virtually falling apart as I attemped to disassemble it. The other had a crack through the water jacket. I think that this model seagull is part...

Re: A Pair of Forties
I managed to remove the outside screw intact after a lot of effort. The gas torch and vice grips are really your friends. Once you get the tinest movement you know that you have won. The recessed bolt resisted all my efforts with both heat and an impact driver. I ended up drilling off the head and t...

Re: Any big gulls in the US?
I have a service manual for seagull outboards which was published in the US (California) in July 1975. The book cover says it covers all models from 1.5 to 6 hp models. It includes a table listing the Seagull models which covers all the forty series and century models. No mention of the 102's, so do...

Re: A Pair of Forties
I've been working on the forty plus and just about every nut and screw has been a struggle but so far so good. The power unit seems to be in good condition. There was no spark at first but the problem was just growth on the points. There doesn't seem to be much corrosion inside the water from what I...

A Pair of Forties
I enjoyed restoring my 102 Seagull, so looked aound for another project. Gumtree came up with a pair of forties only ten minutes drive from my place. That must have been fate, so the two Gulls are now residing in my shed. The featherweight is seized but the plus seems like a candidate for an overhau...
