Re: Another JM magneto resurrected

Fared is the measure of capacitance. A capacitor and condensors is the same thing. Condensor is the old time description. A condensor stores electrical energy and then releases it. If you have 2 6 volt batteries you can join them to create 12volt. ie end to end. + to - to + to -. I tried a few metho...

Re: Australian Olympic vs British Seagull AD102

Brilliant! Actually the AD did come with a brass hex head core plugs and also slotted ones. Your AD barrel has probably been replaced. Wow, look at the size of your crank!

Re: Another JM magneto resurrected

Interesting that with all the changing of flywheels I burred the woodruff key and the flywheel wouldn't slide down. It was a very small burr on the top. I just needed to run it up and down some emery paper. They are quite soft.... are they sacrificial? I get a bit lost with the condensors too. I've ...

Re: Another JM magneto resurrected

I've decided to dress the end of my horseshoe laminated coil mounts on the JM magneto plates. I wish to be in a situation where I can swap plates and flywheels around. The tolerance between the flywheel magnet and the coil mounts are very fine. Being made of thin laminated iron make them somewhat fr...

Re: Another JM magneto resurrected

The usual, penetrating oil, heat (not near the coil though) and the mighty manual impact driver. On the mk1 use double nuts to bind onto stud to unscrew cheek studs. I did have one screw on the JM magneto that didn't wish to move. I had to grind down from the back of the plate (was only proud 1mm) a...

Re: Flywheel woes

I added a century head to my test rig by drilling out a the tank lug and bolting it to the tiller arm attach point. This way l know l have a good earth for the plug and don't have to muck around clamping or holding plug.

Re: Another JM magneto resurrected

I thought I would table the sequence of the screws/insulator washers in the studs point boxes. There are four washers. Two that are solid that fit on the base of the points box and two that are stepped that the wires from the coil and condensor wrap around to insulate from the screws. There is also ...

Re: Dimpleless AD

I've drilled a hole through them in the past and put a small bar through and then use a small tube with two holes which the small bar goes through and then have two larger holes that I use a tommy bar to rotate similar to a box spanner. I think I've seen that tool for an old bit of machinery or cloc...

Re: SD POWERHEAD

That would be a P3 which is desirable. Does it have a B number on tiller side of crankcase? Tempted but hard to find parts in Aus. SD 571 is in Germany. Good luck.

Re: Another JM magneto resurrected

Has anyone a source for the 2BA long, round head slotted set screws that go through the JM coil support and hold the HT lead spring on the underside? About 1.3/4" long or 45.5mm. I need a couple of dozen and matching brass nuts. Thanks.

Another JM magneto resurrected

I adapted a Mk1 coil into a JM magneto with excellent results. Interestingly at first I couldn't get a spark yet when I hung onto the lead.... ouch. Pulled the points apart and cleaned and all good. I'm a little concerned how close the screw heads are to the brass lid. Worth insulating? I even had t...

Re: Roys next build will be a Silver Century ?

If my memory serves me correct l used a piece of a jug heater element as a replacement spring in the past. Only spiral l could find of the right size. I would probably just coil my own now.
