Now the boat's been tried, tested and scored top marks, what was the problem with the engine?
Was it the cold or did one of your competitors have to give you some assistance, to their detrement, ha ha.

Maybe a small synopsis of how you strategically brought the downfall of Charles and Andy would be interesting to read. Or was it a case of full throttle and don't look back?

As a matter of interest how far back were the other two guys?

Well done to all, it looked like a real fun day.

Difficult to say, we couldn't see him!
Only when he was going in the opposite direction
At least he didn't lap us.
I'd guess about 1/4 of the total course in front.

Embarrassing!

Feckin hell, that's embarrassing, that's what you call being destroyed, you couldn've just said he was a bit in front, or he won well.
How did your vessel and engine go (obviously not fast enough) but in general, no lost props or anything???

Have looked on Google Earth Charles, I would say at worst I was a mile in front :D

P.S. It is so hard not to be smug :D

Looks like theirs going to be hours of work on engines and boats to rectify the wrongs that have happened before the marathon comes round, ha ha.

Gerard

ps question off the topic, does any of you guys know much about running electricity to a garage workshop? If yes I'll open a thread in general to ask.

By definition are hydofoils displacement?

Just a thought.

I would say that this hull was not Planing.

Maybe would be if driver was sitting a little more forward.

Yes I could do with some more tuning to get the most from that hull.
I did not want to plane at Lerryn because it is not allowed.
I do believe it is banned from Lerryn now, as far as I can make out.

I will try it with my 170 to see what that does.

A better stretch of water for testing would be handy.

The europeans and americans have changed the rules of the americas cup to make it hard for us Kiwis to take the cup from there grasp. So no difference to what they have done to you. Bloody poor sports I say

Just curious - but if the buoyancy foam you mentioned will support approx 25kg per cubic metre, then wont you need at least 2 cubic metres, as you said further up the thread that the motor is 19kg, the hull is 27.5kg, and no doubt there will be a remote fuel tank penalty as well on longer trips like Hayling?
Seems to my basic maths that 2 or 3 cubic metres would be needed to keep the boat, motor and fuel tank above the surface in the event of a hull fracture?
Course, you'd have to swim!!! :)

Mark I think you'll find you've got your sums wrong,

A litre of foam will support approx 1 kilo!

The foam or buoyancy is needed when the boat sinks and only needs to be enough to keep the boat at the surface. The buoyancy works on displacement, So you need to work out the volume of your buoyancy spaces to get a accurate idea

Charles, you are right, I ballsed up the figures.

When I double-checked them, it turns out Allan was spot on with his estimate of 3 cubic ft to float the boat.

What confused me was him using cubic feet and kilos in the same equation!!

So, 1 cubic ft supports 28kgs, and there are also 28L in a cubic foot
ergo, you're correct, in that 1L supports 1kg.

So if H-A's boat is 27.5kg, plus 19kg for motor, plus 25kg for 20L fuel and remote tank etc, then that 71.5kg would need approx 72L of foam, or 2.5 cubic ft.

Ergo, H-A's estimate of 3 cubic ft would be plenty. But HE would still have to swim!! :) :)
