Storm cowl/mixture

Post by r.tomalin »

I recently obtained for my Forty plus a "storm cowl" from John. This grandly named original item from Seagull is a rubber, downward facing air intake that fits over the carb. However once fitted the engine appeared to run too rich, choking and stopping once raised above idle. An email to the ever helpful John suggested weakening the mixture half a turn by means of the screw that determins the air valve/needle position on the Villers carb. Instant cure, the engine picking up well from idle and running freely right up the rev range. It is surprising that this apparently free flowing device affects the air flow - but it does - especially I suspect if you are possibly slightly rich anyway. However there you are, this might help other potential users thinking of going out in storm force conditions!
