Seagull Film Title Needed
Guys,
My partner Nina and I, with a huge amount of help from our various Seagull racing friends, (including a few who frequent this forum) have spent the last couple of years working on a documentary centring around the build up to the 30th Great Annual Waikato Seagull Regatta. Nina is well down the track on the editing process and we are starting to do the music, but we also need to start thinking about a name.
Some names on the table are:
Blokes of a Feather
Flocking of the Gulls
The Waikato Flyers
Waikato or Broke
The Back River Racers
Blokes, Boats & Birds
Ideally the name will touch on the theme of the film which is the fantastic Seagull outboard and the brave men who use them. The film follows 5 seasoned seagull racers and a first time team in their build up to the 30th anniversary of the Waikato race. There are winners, losers, broken boats, sinkings and triumphs along the way. The film is a tribute to grass roots boat building, the kiwi way and a quirky little engine that claims to be 'The best outboard motor in the world'
Anyone care to throw in their 5 cents? Play on words welcome!
Thanks Adrian.

Several spring to mind, the first comes with sound.
Smoke on the water.
Bang bang chit chit chitty bang bang.
Back to the past.
The roaring forties.
A concise history of the last Century.
Up s**t creek with a paddle.

Yes the title must capture that inherent "Burt Munro" spirit that seams so much a part of some "seagullers"

Nice work guys, keep them coming. We do have to be a bit careful that we don't find ourselves in trouble over a copywrite though. Which rules out a few good ones unfortunately.

Some of the others put forward at the bar last night:
Guys and Gulls
Gullible Men
Gulls just wanna have fun
Fowl Play
Buoys and Gulls
sea my gull go!
2 stroke heaven
2 strokes to freedom
Down the creek without a paddle.
A long way down - the tale of man vs river.
Man vs Gull
A tale of blokes, boats and birds.
There must be an easier way

There's a lot of hoops to jump through in the NZ film industry. The copywrite side of things is just part of it.
Some of the quirks are:
We must have a signed release document from everyone who appears in the film.
We must be able to provide written proof of permission for any logo we show (british seagull included ) from the rights holding company
Any music we use must have written permisson from the rights holder (typically NZ$400 for a no name song)
It's mostly about protecting a distributors ass, as they don't want to be sued by a record company for a film they have on their books.
Although, British Seagull have been very good to us. We will use some of their historical adverts in the film and they gave us free permission to do so, which is great. Nina and I are funding the whole project as we don't meet any of the requirements for national funding, so we do a lot of begging. I think we've spent about $20k so far, which is very very low budget for a 90 minute film. We've put in about 1200 hours of labour and poor old Nina has been in tears a few times. So it's been hard work, but I hope what we produce will be warmly received.

Now we're going to see Chilli racing T-shirts in 72mm technicolour, I wonder when I should put mine on ebay to get the best value? only worn once.
Do all film crews use carbon booms?
Where & when for the premiere?
Ignore me Adrian & carry on with the great work!

Re: Seagull Film Title Needed
Hi Charles, Yeah carbon or alloy booms. The camera out on the end is pretty heavy with a good lens on it, so a light boom helps reduce the amount of counter weight needed back by the handle. The down side of carbon is that it transmits vibration quite well.
Nina has had a bit of work recently, so only fitting in a couple of hours editing each day. She's looking like being on the film crew for the next season of 'Power Rangers' so that puts a bit of urgency on finishing the seagull doco. We've got a friend of ours composing some music so we don't have to pay a licencing fee for someone else's stuff. It's sounding really great actually! But we'll need another couple of months before we have anything to show.
