To bling or not to bling - that is the question..

The seller of this engine has certainly spent many hours polishing!

I personally like clean and tidy, but don’t go mad with the polishing. However over in the US highly polished outboards are very common.

Each to their own, is my reaction. It is not the way I would refurbish an engine, but there is no criticism whatsoever - in fact much admiration for all the time and the attention to detail. It also depends on whether one is going to use or to display the outboard.
I think that there are enough Seagulls around (with a few exceptions) for people to do whatever they want with them. Lets try to cater for all tastes and be welcoming to everybody.

I agree, I think this is a very nice job, a lot of work has gone into it.

I seem to get told off when I comment about this type of motor.
No it's not the type of motor for me.
Now I will point out why, this is a fully restored motor.
The tell-tail looks drilled out and has some type of washer attached.
The clutch rod will not work properly as its set up wrong.
If it was ever used, the flywheel cover is sitting so high, it wouldn't keep any water away from the ignition system at all.
Point made.

It seems to me the compression joint on the exhaust pipe has been replaced the wrong way round as well as a non-standard washer being used. Thus the water outlet hole points to the horizontal not the vertical.

Nobody so far mentioned the second exhaust clamp at the bottom. I wonder if the joint is made as close to sealed as possible that it might encourage spent two-stroke oil to exit through the sub-ejector instead of leaking all over the gearbox. Of course even if it were so, the waste still might leak through the slot for the water delivery pipe.

Kieth, I'm not saying you are mistaken but how is the clutch rod set up wrong? Please elaborate.

The rod should be able to be held above the clamp when out of gear, that's why the lever is sprung.
So if it don't jump into gear when you are not expecting it to, like when you are staring the motor, its normally going to be at a high rpm, this would damage the gearbox, the clamp has a ground spot just for this.
With the rod end facing outwards, it's no doing a thing.
