Bought Another One

Post by Raya »

Couldn't help but add this AD to my collection when I saw it advertised on Gumtree. The owner said that it was going when he purchased it ten years ago but has been in his shed since then. He said it turns over and would probably start after a little TLC. There was only this one picture on the ad so hard to gauge the condition, but the price ($150) was reasonable and it is only a couple of hours drive from home. I'll post the serial number and a few pics after I pick it up on Friday.

A later AD with bow tie prop and subejector exhaust and one nipple box. An honest motor. After WW2 industry was directed to ramp up their export market to bring in the bacon to replenish Englands depleted coffers. AUS was a prime market and a lot of 102's ended up here.

I picked up the outboard today and am pleased with my puchase. It looks complete and original except for the red HT lead. It is missing a thumbscrew washer but otherwise looks complete. The plating is in pretty good condition considering the age which the serial number (AD13587) indicates is either 1950 or 1951.

Here are are few pics. I'm not sure if the fuel tap and fuel line is original. Loks a bit strange. Let me know.

The A series did have a copper fuel line in similar shape to yours but you are correct it does look a little strange ie extra fittings.

Thanks for the encouraging replies.

Is the fuel tap original? I haven't seen one like this on a seagull before.

I found another SD on this site with an identical tap, so it looks like it must be from seagull.

Those taps never passed through the Seagull factory gates, sorry.

Certainly not seagull taps. Dont forget that many parts from things such as lawnmowers, motorcycles and even cars used similar sized fittings.

Maybe someone bought up a batch of surplus taps after the war and put them on ebay and said that they were suitable for Seagulls. This might explain their prolification. In any case, I'll source a suitable replacement tap for this motor.

I cleaned up the outboard today with some degreasing fluid and a pressure cleaner. No surprises other than someone used some silver spray to tart it up at some time in it's life. No sign of a transfer on the tank so that must have been repainted at some stage.

I took off the gearbox end cap for a look and found that it was packed with grease. No sign of water in there. I'll dissemble the box tomorrow and see what lies beneath the grease.
