Sadly I wasn’t able to get out the oil plug by just using oil, heat and normal tools. Tomorrow i‘ll have to build a wrench socket for the wheel gun. Started today with filing a thick washer but i‘ll have to weld it to a screw or something like that.

PS: Is it normal that there wasn’t a gasket between the gearbox cases? I think i‘ll use a adhesive bonding compound for it.

There is a 0.25 mm (10 thou) paper gasket under the end cap & a thrust washer between the bearing case in the end cap & the crown wheel, this hardened washer is important as it sets the clearance between the crown wheel & the pinion gears, they are available in 3 three different thicknesses, 2.1, 2.33, & 2.58 mm, (14, 13 & 12 Gauge).
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

Thank you very much for your special knowledge. I’m sure there wasn’t a paper gasket, but the engine isn’t untouched so everything is possible.

The trust washer has been there, a ~2mm thick brass(?) one and a very thin steel one. I’m sorry for the bad quality, but i‘ll Show you a picture of both and the crown wheel. Sadly they’ve been falling into the grease so that I don’t know the correct positions but by interpretation of the inrun the brass one ist next to the end cap and the steel one is between the brass washer and the crown wheel.

Seagull supply

Post by Johanna »

This weekend nothing really happened. But my parents have been here for a visit and I got the last Seagulls. They’re not in the best condition. Especially the 102‘s have a lot of parts missing and sadly the AD20524 is seized. The parts from the box are the rest of two 102 Plus, but nothing really interesting.

But sadly or not I had to thought about the future of this collection. I‘ll keep the 102‘s for the first to finish the engine i started with. And I’m trying to get the Century 100 back to life as a gift for my father who had also a lot of work by collecting the engines and bringing them to my home. And because of shortage of space I’ll have to give away the rest of the engines the next time.

But now you should get some pictures…

Would you happen to have a 102 plus 3 blade prop? I'm looking for one :P

It wasn’t easy, but the wheel gun was the winner in the end...

Thanks a lot! I’m very excited to see the result in the end as a mixture of patina, cleaning and repainting the lower unit... You‘ll get more pictures as soon as it’s possible for me to go on with it.

Had a season start yesterday!

Post by Johanna »

Yesterday I had some time at my workshop again. First I replaced the oil against gearbox grease. The 140 was to thin and leaking at the prop.

After that my plan to disjoint the lower unit failed, so there isn’t the original screw any more and it’s still a seized unit.

But than the lower unit got some paint and was mounted again.

Let’s have a look:

But now a question…

Post by Johanna »

But I have a question about the correct mounting bracket. I have the black one from the 53‘s and the aluminium oxide one from the 51‘s. And they‘re different in detail. Which one would be the correct one for my engine?

Don't put grease in the lower unit, it will result in little or no lubrication to the gears and pinion bush. If you put 140 grade oil in and fill it to just below the level of the prop shaft it will be fine.
