But I find it hard to believe that from say 1942 till 1945 nobody thought of putting an SD on the back of a boat as the British seagull transom mounts were not made until 1945/6 apart from maybe a few “Dutch” mounts.

Rene, I find it difficult to believe that the "Dutch" bracket was designed & built during a time of austerity, they're just too big & heavy!

I can't find the notebook that I wrote all the technical details in (weight & thread patterns) but from memory it weighted more than 5 kilos!
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.
