Drive pinion split pin.

My 40 plus is already to be reassembled, so I started with the gearbox, after putting the pinion gear back into place and making sure the bolt recess was lined up with the casing, :x The split pin holding the pinion collar had snapped, after fiddling about I got the rest of the pin out :x :x :x
The question is how do you get the split pin back in without removing the whole thing:?:
I noticed the pinion collar pin hole does not line up with the slot in the casing making it difficult to put a pin However this must have been how it was done in the factory, :x

Anyone had this problem before :?:

I think you might have to take the pinion out again to re-fit the pin. Make sure that when it's fitted that the ends of the pin aren't likely to catch anywhere in the gear casing and that the rounded end is flattened as much as possible so there's adequate clearance everywhere.
It's a very awkward job to do at the best of times, this is another reason why if it's not broken leave well alone.

By the sounds of things you've got a pretty good handle on it any way.

Not sure if anyone is interested, I solved the split pin issue :lol:
I removed the pinion gear again :x replaced the split pin, I found a good trick to replace the pinion gear and brass housing I found by heating the alloy casing by blow torch :lol: the whole unit just slid into place no need to apply any force :lol: :lol:
Lined up nice and easy.

A bit of further info I found when removing the pinion gear and brass housing heating the casing with a blowtorch is a must. :lol:
To clamp the pinion end I used a pair of mole grips which I clamped into a vice, using a copper faced thor hammer the wadding side, a few taps of the housing the pinion came straight out. :lol:
A good dose of WD-40 helped as well.

Well done, but perhaps a read of the Service Manual might have saved you the trouble of reinventing the wheel!

John & British Seagull both have them in stock.
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.
