I've also been thinking that you could turn the box upside down and clamp the pinion shaft in a vice and fabricate a similar set up using two bolts to wind it out. Saves welding. I've also been advised that heat can damage though mine survived the oven. You cam also try tapping it out from inside the box through the front plate after removing crown and shaft. Use a softer metal drift of course.
