Where are all the European events and 'enthusiasts'..??

Post by Buzzook »

G'day everyone

Just taking the opportunity to reflect on what we Aussie Seagull owners have achieved since I was first mad enough to put an 'ad' on ebay 12 months ago....yes, it's our first anniversary!

Since late April 2011 we have:
- grown email list membership to 91 enthusiasts around the country
[39 in New South Wales; 17 in Queensland; 16 in Victoria; 7 in South Australia; 7 in Tasmania; 1 each in Western Australia and Northern Territory, so far none in the Australian Capital Territory - perhaps Seagulls are not 'correct' enough for our political capital..??] :)

We have been to or attended as the Oz Seagull group:
- Jacaranda Festival Wooden Boat Regatta, Grafton
- RMYC Wooden Boat Festival, Newport

- Held our first National Gathering at Myall Lakes in January

Held 'local meets' in:
- Melbourne - Rye in March
- Sydney - Bobbin Head in April
- Brisbane - Scarborough in April

...all of which were reported on this forum.

...and we are in the planning stages for a 'first meet' in Hobart, Tasmania.

We also have in the pipeline:
- Mid-Qld meet in June at Maryborough
- October overnight trip down the Hawkesbury in NSW

Major events proposed:
- National Gathering 2013 - in conjunction with the Hobart Wooden Boat Festival in Feb.

- "Summit to Sea" Murray River Marathon in October 2013. Will be 4-6 weeks divided into 4 stages so people can do one, more or all sections. Will require 2 motors in mint rebuilt reliable condition and serious commitment. International visitors will be attending from NZ and USA.

So to those (specifically) Kiwi critics whose ribald banter lead me to place that first 'ad' on ebay after I returned from doing the Waikato race last year - thank you. Your good-natured teasing - common to much Trans-Tasman friendship - has seen more Seagull activity in Australia in the past 12 months than has happened in the UK, the home of Seagulls.

I am reliably informed that the 2012 Hayling Island Marathon proposed for July so far has only 4 starters, and none of them in the 'much-demanded' 40 Series class.

When you consider that some attendees at our National Gathering in January (to menton just one event) had driven in excess of 1200km (745miles - almost the return distance London to Edinburgh) to be there, and we managed 5 boats, 11 motors and 15 attendees in total, it makes the UK Seagull owners look like a pretty lackadaisical lot.

Why, even the Dutch were able to send representatives to last year's Hayling Island event - and they had to shell out for boat and trailer passage on a cross-Channel ferry....never mind driving all the way from the Netherlands..!

It's kind of ironic that many on this forum are somewhat scathing of the alleged "American style" restorations, involving lots of polish and not much use..... :) :)

And before the less well-humoured take lighters to blowtorches, the above 'critical' comments were prompted and approved of in discussions with 'more active' UK residents. They are intended to be a 'gentle whipping' - much as the Kiwis gave to me last year.

So, how about it, all you European 'enthusiasts'......put your motor and boat where your mouth is, and start organising, supporting and attending some more events.

Maybe even thinking outside the square...as Lerryn's residents have done...to create an event that 'happens' to involve Seagulls, but is really about local community..???

Let's be honest, few of us are really into the 'racing' exploits that drive the Bermudans, many of the Kiwis and a few Poms.... 8)

...but we still love our Seagulls....

So let's all get out there and USE them a bit more, eh?? :D :D

Well put Buzzook. These poms seem to be very good at finding excuses not to attend events, much rather run their engines in rubbish bins and post the videos on YouTube.

Well said Mark.

I personally can't see the point of being an armchair expert. I have said in the past that there are far more talkers than doers on this site, perhaps people are frightened to bring their seagulls out, and actually running them.

I have got to the point where I have put Seagull racing, if not all Seagulling on the back burner, there is little point in wasting time and money on these engines if there is little chance to use them other than taking the kids on the local river.

Charles and I have spent quite a bit of time finding a suitable venue for a summer event, and are not sure why it has not been received with more enthusiasm.

Itchenor has perfect launch site with large car park, loads of easy boating, friendly boat club with cheap accommodation, bar and great food.

I had better learn Dutch as there will be almost more Dutchmen than Brits at Hayling this year  . :D That reminds me must finish the boat for Jan.

I tried to run an event last year, but response was zero, not even a "sorry I can't come" I'm debating wether to try again.

Personally I think having an international owners group of some sort with country chapters would be a good idea, registers for historic engines, along with some sort of national event in each country where interest was sufficient should be achieveable. A national event could take many forms, race, marathon, show, or a mix of all of this etc. etc.

The International newsletter is a good start.

The stationary engine and agricultural guys seem to manage this, we could too. It's a question of working together, and this forum is central to it. I try to post stuff of interest on all my projects, and have got to know a few people who are like minded, get those projects photographed and on the forum!!

I'm also hoping to attend the Hayling Island bash, but I need to find a suitable boat.

Perhaps in the UK we're all fairly close to the water and don't need to have rallies and the like to use our motors and chat to other owners. I talk to others of the 1417 members of this forum on a regular basis, in fact there was one at my Yacht Club an hour or two back, I'll be talking to another this afternoon and a different bloke tomorrow.

Many of us use our motors on a frequent basis; on boats not in dustbins, I certainly do.

Maybe we just don't need organised events, in the same way that I tend not to go on 'rallies' or 'cruising in company' - I potter about on my own or with family. That's just the way it is.

As many on this forum are aware I've tried very hard to get people to come and have a look at what must have been one of the most comprehensive collection of Marstons and SDs - all running - ever displayed anywhere.

Perhaps we're just that bit more conservative..

All

I think Buzzook has done an admiral job of gathering interest & co-ordinating events. Often this is a thankless task. Underlying it all is a huge latent Ozzy interest. 8)

Time for a laugh: It seems old Britannia mistakenly rounded up all the cheeky upstarts, it's best & brightest, &, labelled them rebellious convicts, &, sent them to the colonies. LOL. It probably seemed a good idea at the time. LOL. The peasants are revolting. LOL. Maybe this refining of the gene pool lead to our likes or Earnest Rutherford (splitting atom), Edmund Hillary (everest), Bill Hamilton (jet-boat), John Britten (bike) & others...

Sadly NZ is repeating this mistake by oppressing our best & brightest innovators & entrepreneurs

Interesting point Rex.

Was the Easter 2012 Great Annual Waikato River Seagull Race the SECOND biggest Seagull race this year, Lerryn being the biggest ? :D

Dont forget the Great British Olympic Spirit :D

Glad to see everyone has taken my post with the humour with which it was intended, but CharlesP makes a good point....when you're never more than 75miles from the sea, it's a lot easier to simply use the motors for 'general purposes' rather than feeling the need to either 'race' them or to 'congregate' with like-minded souls....

Perhaps we need a Monthly Photo Competition for "General Use of a Seagull Outboard" and post entries on a forum thread, winner to receive (as yet unspecified) prize? We'd probably have to bar Robin, or he'd win it every month...LOL

I think H-A's point about Lerryn being 'the biggest' "Seagull event" is well made - but note my previous comment about this being a "community event" first, and a Seagull event second....

Perhaps those of us seeking to broaden the enjoyment and involvement in all things Seagull could seek opportunities to broaden the scope of 'Seagull use', as they've done in Lerryn?

I further note that many of the NZ events have a more community focus, in which the Seagull event or 'race' is merely one part of the whole....so perhaps we should look to other "water-based events" and seek some opportunity for involvement in them, and thus bring Seagulls to a wider audience?

How about 'modern boat shows? Nautical festivals (eg Portsmouth)?

I intend to do more of the 'wooden boat festivals', and certainly attending such actual boating events, with a Seagull on the back, is one way to find other enthusiasts....

...but I'm also keen to get our guys out into the wider world of 'other events' by getting Seagulls included in things like 'putt-putt regattas' and small wooden sailboat festivals and meets. For example, one of our Melbourne guys, Rob is into wooden sailboats and regularly attends Wooden Boat Association meets, with his Seagull on the back of his sailboat...and he and I are attempting to encourage more Seagull owners to attend such events..

Perhaps, as a way forward, we might persuade John to open up an "Other Events" thread on which people could post such events they intend to attend, and thus provide a line of communication for people to hook up?

On that subject, another idea is to add a thread for "Seagull non-racing Events"....but these are just ideas....

To save overcrowding it in a longer email, I've attached an "SoS-specific" version of my Oz 'recruitment poster' made available to our lot over here.

Basically, it's an A4 in landscape format with tabs on the bottom for people to tear off...like a 'for sale' item on a local community noticeboard...so if anyone's willing to put one of these up anywhere, I'd be happy to 'custom design' one to suit your requirements...perhaps use your email address instead of John's website....or whatever

The original is in hi-res PDF format, which I cant post to the forum, hence the low-res JPEG attached...so if anyone wants a copy of the hi-res PDF just PM me with an email address...

Just print it off, snip between the tabs, and pin it up on whatever noticeboards you have access to - community, boat clubs, marinas...etc etc

Yes, I'd have to conceed Lerryn is the biggest (in terms of participation). And well done too. Obviously appeals to a wide audience.

I agree with Niander, but if Charles was running his stand at the show again, I would travel to pay a visit if I was free. It's a long way from the Mull of Kintye...

It's a real shame that the Marston owners won't post pictures, or details of their projects, there is a lot of interest in these engines.

I know of a handful of Marston owners, they don't advertise the fact on the forum and that's entirely up to them if they wish to post about them on here, but that said it is a little like a private owners club, as the mention of a Marston on the forum leads to the threat of it being deleted.

As far as seagull outings go, it's a shame we can't do better.
