Very interesting. Trouble with being never used is that the day you use it becomes used so you end up keeping it as an unused ornament.

I have to agree with you there.

But i have ofter wondered how fast Paris2 would have gone with that engine on the back.

If i ever build the chris steel special it would be the perfect motor for a OZ seagull racer, but with two 23 foot dories in the yard and a wife, that wood will be in the shed for a while yet.
And i own a yami 4 and a mariner 5, and an 8 now as well.

So hope it go's to a good home.

Yes i don't know the whole history, one of the very wise englishmen would know but i think they were italian selva motors just sold by seagull.
Because the japanese motors were taking over.

Learned some more;

British Seagull

Selva S.p.A Italy manufactures the Seagull Sports range of outboards for British Seagull following their agreement to cooperate in production of a new range of Seagull outboards.

Following the decision by Chillington Marine, who were the manufacturers of British Seagull, to discontinue marketing the Seagull range, Selva Marine Sales UK Ltd. was formed by Mike Gregory, who was the Service and Sales Manager of British Seagull, to continue the sales and service of the Seagull model range.

The seagull sport 4, 5 and 6 were the same engine. power head 125cc but the 4 had internal tank only 2 liters. and forward and neutral, plus 360 degree stearing.
While the 5 and 6 had reverse as well no 360 stear, and a external 10 leter tank. Same weight prop gear ratio 13 to 30 so all really 6 hp. and not as you said a seagull in any way.

To quote Charles UK "Seagull Sports, which were a badge engineered reed valved loop charged 125cc Selva with a FNR gearbox."

How can it be a British Seagull when it was a Selva with Seagull painted on it? Useful for adding to building foundations, but that is about it  "Sort after for Seagull racing"

That should read Selva racing surely?

I have a couple of these & have seen the for sale one hanging from a rafter in the owners roof, when the Bermudians see that one it will vanish!

These were permitted to race in Seagull races as it gave people without access to an engineering workshop & with limited budgets & time, a cheap way of finding a competitive motor so increasing the field sizes in the fast classes.

They were only raced in the NZ & BM Seagull F1 classes & were the reason I built my blue 170, just to show that you didn't have to buy a Spagetti Seagull to see 30 mph in a one man Seagull race boat, but we won't mention that you could have bought 2 new sports & got change for the money I threw at my blue 170, just to prove a point.

They are the fastest single cylinder stock outboard that I've ever used, more akin to Ducati than British Seagull.

One with a pipe took 9 seconds off my record in NZ!
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

"Bloody Hell". Did you have the gps?

And thank you for the film.

By the way how go's "Lost amongst the Seagulls" your movie?
Its time cinemas in Australia had another blockbuster for New Zealand.

By just plonking the engine on with no setup we were doing about 37kmh. I'm sure with some effort and some setup tuning it would be faster, but the hull is not really designed for that engine of course.
