Back Again Your Advice Needed Please

Post by Coaster »

Got my seagull back together after buying a new block, was it a pig to start. checked all airways are clear but its still not pumping water like it should, and when the engine starts to get hot this turns into steam !
As far as I know everything is clear should it be doing this. I can't undo the centre screw to inspect the inpellor, why did'nt they made this into a nut ?

I had good luck removing the recessed screw by using the largest square-shaft screwdriver that would fit.

To gain good access to the offending screw:

Remove the screw securing the exhaust tube, then slide the exhaust tube down.
Under the exhaust port, loosen the now exposed water tube fitting.
Loosen the powerhead flange nuts, and remove the powerhead from the drive tube.
Slide the exhaust tube off the water pump housing. Now the way is clear.

Clamp the gearbox/drive tube assembly into a vice and, applying plenty of downward pressure to the screw, turn the screwdriver shaft with a wrench.

Of course, you may want to preceed all this with a good soaking of penetrating oil, heat, etc.

Check the copper water tube and it's fitting for blockage. I found and removed a burr from the end of mine which improved low rpm flow noticably.
And while you have the gearbox in a vice, it doesn't hurt to clean up the water intake openings with a file.
A good seal between the pump housing and gearbox is essential, so check the top of the gearbox with a straightedge to make sure it's flat. Maybe a new gasket and sealant is in order.
Other than a worn or damaged impellor, there's little else that could be wrong.

I replaced all of the lower unit screws with John's stainless allen head bolts - a worthwhile investment IMHO. Use anti-sieze compound.
