OK, the continuing story.

Swapped motors and the patient is now at home standing in the corner, I've told it to have a jolly good think about its behaviour and deliberately stood the old faithful 40+ next to it so hopefully it will get jealous as it sees me keep going out with that! ( I do think psychology important in cases like this )

Haven't had time to strip it yet but have noticed something concerning. The fuel cap has a very small leak, more a weeping, but with the motor tilted I think the fuel has slowly been leaking and dripping onto and presumably into the ignition.

this could well explain why it has been getting slowly worse over time.

Obviously I will soon find out, but can anyone think of anything that fuel will have / could have dissolved or otherwise ruined in that area?

manys the time I've had to give 'Gulls a severe talking to, inviting them to an in-depth career review, to even a bloody sound thrashing ...made me feel better

problem now sounds like an electrical one
points totally clean? ...set at 20 thou? ...swap the plug lead with a known good 'un?

p'raps try the thrashing, or at least some really foul language

Beleive me, it has already heard all the Anglo Saxon words I know!

As this is a 1988 Model 90 it doesn't have points ( does it? ) Not sure if it has Mk 3 or Mk 4 ignition, have to check the flywheel when I strip it, thats why I wondered if the fuel has dissolved something?

I would have hoped the coils etc would be fairly impervious so I am still thinking HT lead but it makes you think.

Oh and I am not doing my back in lifting it into a tree!
