but at the same time it would be a good exercise to take that one apart ... and try not to break it, more of a test than anything.

Even so, i wouldn't bother doing anything to it unless you have a powerful heat source close to hand. You'll be surprised at how much easier it will come apart with a lick from a blowtorch.

If you really must take it apart, a hammer and chisel (or a disc cutter) might be quicker just to see how these things were put together in the first place, but perhaps more importantly how critical oil is and what it does for your gearbox and gears.
Its basically scrap after all and well past any salvage.
