Your looking in the right direction, but possibly making the wrong assumptions, look up (Helmholtz resonance).

That doesn't really explain, what I was referring to, there is sort of a tuned exhaust effect working in the the inlet passage giving a more than 10% boost to the carb, I haven't done the calcs to see if making the cowl telescopic could increase the rev range even more.
