Casting defect in exhaust port area deflecting the hot gas in that direction or a damaged piston giving the same result.

No point in fixing the outside without finding out why it happened, unless it's not going to do any work again.
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

Just as a quick FYI, i ALWAYS take apart any new purchase (just to satisfy my curiosity more than anything). ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS :o
Seagulls might look good in the pics when you first look at a potential purchase, but once you've got it there in front of you it tells a WHOLE DIFFERENT STORY. :shock:

Up close and personal tells it all.
As CHARLES suggests i would take the cylinder of this one B. Have a squizzy inside to see what's going on with it and how good that repair really is.
Better to be safe than sorry (you know it makes sense)

another thought to the "hot spot"

possibly a heavy build up of carbon/soot on the inside of the exhaust tube close to the exhaust port?

A lot of my motors came to me in such a condition. Probably not been apart in many a year.
What with the improvements in 2 stroke oils over the years compared to many mineral oils back in the day (or worse still, used car engine oil i think has been mentioned before somewhere), so over time using this concoction there would seem to be a lot of soot/carbon that doesn't get burned off. It just sticks to the inside of the tube.
My theory is (i know i've been proved wrong once or twice) whenever you start to use the motor for extended periods of time for say 1 hour or more, the exhaust is going to get pretty hot above the water discharge pipe.Any deposits in the immediate area of the port will start to burn HOT.What you see on the outside is the chrome finish coming off the tube from excessive heat. Looking at the pics,the "hot spot" is clearly above the discharge pipe. Any stains below the discharge pipe will have been cooled by a spray of water so the pipe is much cooler down below.

right or wrong?

Once again fair sensible thoughts as not really rocket surgery.

Yes it will be apart very shortly after some Christmas cleaning up around Mums/my place. Premises have evolved into a bit of a B junk heap in quiet corners aye. (I am leaving the workshop toilet stand as is..........There is more room in it though as it is rather long winded behind the pic......thinking thinking)

Also a possibility is that someone stuffed something in the tube in an attempt to muffle it down. Seen that before but no actual hotspot was evident with that one.

Interesting though.

We shall all see cause and because shortly.

With prop sorted and useable the lower unit looks good.

Ship's Cat Cello is not that bothered as She is guarding the Dugite Stick/winkle outerer (just off to Her Starboard beam).

The replacement Gearbox removed earlier...............Came with everything painted after assembly.......then the prop went on etc.

As new still oarsome!

This is Nasty Stuff.

As my Old first employer said to me at 17 years of age "Shifts everything except your religion" Well it was something different but the same concept aye.

I left it on too long.......dried hard as brick.......another coat to soften the "Softener" :oops:

Last time it was rain and cold.

It will have an obvious blemish remaining of course that will disrupt the general overall condition of the rest of the chrome. I have another tube showing similar age to replace it with. No one will know between just you and me yeh?

Before removing power (or lack of) head I started it with a spray of WD40 before a dose of Mortein. Just had to see.

No redbacks internally as well :lol:

First pull, on the trolley, and ran maybe 3 seconds.

Compression by hand is better after.

The cases had been filled with lubricant to the brim and drained when I first got it in my hooks so nothing would be harmed by that.

Off it comes before the new year and we shall see what is what with hotspot.

Bugger it.

Pulled it off just now took maybe 5 mins.

Carbon build up inside the tube especially a large lump where the hotspot is.

No lack of oiling in its life.

I should remove the block and clean other carbon in port etc as will just happen again. Looks like a Hepolite piston in there . There could be a defect on the piston unseen still. The brown bit in the centre is actually the exhaust side of the piston top.

Actually there may well be a defect on one side of the deflecter.....................better in the sun light than this pic.

Block comes off then to make sure.

Ok

If the block is off then everything else is apart.........................might as well as only an hour or two extra. I have everything required and painting block will be easier. Wartime SD etc rings in the parts box. Pistons various coming out of my ears etc. I may get a new piston and pin from John if nothing I have measures up.

Quite prolific smokers some of these 102's B.
Soot/carbon builds up in a lot of places on these especially around the exhaust port.(and the top part of the exhaust tube above the water ejection outlet/inlet)
Also worth pointing out that in days gone by, most oils were mineral type,but nowadays, semisynthetic or even fully synthetic 2 stroke oils are more common. And with more modern oils comes less carbon and soot build up.

By the looks of your cylinder, it might not have run recently within 5/10 years or more.
Give it a VERY THOROUGH clean all around the exhaust port and check by eye for any "nasty looking casting snots" that might be there. (there probably will be)
Or worse still, a crack?
Have you got any little die grinders? They will come in handy for jobs like this.Smooth anything that looks like it shouldn't be there :wink:

Some of these 102 cylinders really are bloody awfull things. Factor in 40-50 years of use, and this is what you see! (hot spots,cracks,corrosion etc.etc.)
You get the idea B

(now you can see why i strip em right down to nuts and bolts, just finishes the job that BS should have done all those years ago)

I reckon another week or two should see it right before its ready for smoke and noise.

Somewhere in there are a couple of nice original exhaust tubes with no hot spots to choose from. This is left over shed #3 after the "Big Move Of 2012". :oops:

There is a thread about that somewhere but all of the pics are probably gone now.

No time like now 2015 to get everything organized?
