Re: TC--102
Got my package from john @ SOS Today. Fast tranaction and very fast postage. Thanks John. Waiting for some bits to come from Stelios and that be all the parts i need for this motor. Im also waiting for my local chrome plater to come back from the X-mass new years break at the end of this month, to get the driveshaft tube plated and Maybe the exhaust tube as well. I was going to try a bit on the bench grinder to see if the plating comes of easy to have a brass finish. Of to see Chris today to get a tank and some bits as well. And im going to pick up Lazarus.

Re: TC--102
If you want to see what the brass looks like, just get the plater to remove the old chrome in his prep tank first
No abrasion marks and his first step in plating again anyway.

Re: TC--102
Got some parts for the Tc from The Great Greek (Stelios) I had a go at buffing the lower gearcase on the bench grinder. Im not after a mirror finish but im a bit confused on how the finish should be. There is a lot off pitting in the alloy, Im sure its how its been moulded and not from abuse or extreme weathering. Im only after a semi sheen finish. How does it look, do i need to use a diffrent method at all. What ive done is use a brass 8 inch wire wheel and then finished it of with a 240 grit Abrasive polishing wheel to get this finish.

Re: TC--102
The trouble with wirebrushing is that it just burnishes the surface of the alloy. Because of the pitting you will need to use an abrasive wheel to dress out the pitting, and then use progressively finer grades (down to 800 grit wet and dry) to get the finish, ending with a rotary polishing wheel. It does take a long time.
Wear a mask if dressing alluminium though!
Did the TC have a painted finish originally?
Can't beat a polished up 102 gearcase!

Re: TC--102
I was under the impression that they were painted, Well I painted my one, but each to their own.
If you can help it, try to keep away from using a wire wheel, its quicker and easier, but on the softer ally boxes it can make them look worse.

You can also dress out the pits by hand using medium and then fine emery paper, followed by different grades of wet and dry. Good for the finger tips

The type thats on my T-C is bare alloy. Ive never seen a gearbox that looks like this one,But this is what came of it. Im going down to my local super hardware store to have a look at other types finishing wheels.

Looks like a normal 102 gearbox to me.
you can certainly get a lot of those marks out of it
and tidy up the bottom of it ...slight radius etc

This is what I use

Works very well not too abrasive and gives good results.

Nice H-A!
I've found dressing out alloy to be quite difficult, as the soft alloy clogs the emery paper or whatever other abrasive. I generally dress by hand using medium emery paper, then switch to wet and dry, working through to the 800 grit. Then a metal polish to the required finish. I don't have a polishing wheel, so don't go to the level of polish H-A has achieved in his pic above. I tend to go for a duller finish, and leave a lot of the dints and dings in place.
I must get myself a bench polisher...

Re: TC--102
Ok back to finishing of the TC. Im going to get the exhaust and driveshaft tube rechromed. Does anyone in australia know how much roughly it would cost me to get them done. Ive already been told $360.00 over the phone
. If thats the case i will probably just paint the drive shaft tube and find a way to sand of all the old chrome on the exhaust tube and leave it bare brass.
