As you said, its not the right size tube, so I did flare the top end to fit, but its not noticeable, you need sound?

Great stuff Keith! I still wouldn't use SS on any gull when brass and ally are available but no deigning they are two very nice refurbishments; over to you B, err what's it to B?

Polished brass looks rather nice, but a pain to keep shiny! Stainless won't tarnish anything like as quickly as chrome on brass (particularly when the chrome has a few scratches and dings in it after 50-60 years of use)

Trouble with stainless is with exhausts (especially in 2 strokes) the "ring a ding ding" is much louder compared to the denser material in the brass. Aluminium sounds especially loud in the larger motors.

Nice to see and hear an FVP in action.
This will spur me out of the armchair to get on and finish FVP8925 ( with its slightly distressed chrome on brass exhaust pipe!).

You have to take into consideration, that this FVP was my first Seagull, a £15 boot sale find, so I had no spares, now its different, I'm constantly falling over the stuff.

Back into it.

Time to mount the tank and work out position of decal........I applied some "artificial" felt to everything so it all slides around until clamped down without scratching anything. It is recycled American Soda bottles going by the label...

All good but when everything about right the offering up of the replacement decal?

It is either the decal is too wide or the clamps are too big......................they are the original clamps by the way.

The earlier version fits but I need that for other......

This is my original decal and clamps it never did fit why does any one know. By the way that is a beautifull job!

I had the same problem when i did this one!
A bit too far one way and you can't get the whole decal in between the straps. The decal was placed bang on centre with the stubs but still didn't work out quite right!!

Jubilee clips might be good alternative (just like the SD's) as they're not as wide.
I use some old bicycle inner tube cut into lengths, the same width as the clips for protection.

Noted positioning of decal ........I will off set mine a bit.

So nearly ready to get the Old Dear wet.

I will be finding another carb body and storm cowl as when complete what you see will not be useable...........all threads slightly "Stuffed"......well "Stuffed any way you may wish to appreciate actually". Inlet and cowl threads............rest of body is OK so will use on an Anzani if required as they have a clamp on the thread for their choke arrangement.

The exhaust tube will be chromed again.

Fun in diminishing sun aye.

It's always going to be a tricky thing to work out with decals and their position.
Once it's on, IT'S ON FOR GOOD. No re-adjusting with it as they're incredibly delicate. (kind of annoying really)
The trick is to measure 100 times (just to be sure) the position including the width of the strap/jubilee clip (whichever you're using to hold the tank on). The bit in the middle is what you've got to play with.
The tank in the earlier pics i did, i measured at least 10 times to work out the centre position BETWEEN the straps. What you see is the decal a bit too much to the right.
Even so, with everything absolutely spot on, there's still some of the decal hidden underneath each strap!

Question:
Is the earlier "flying seagull" decal narrower or wider than the later decal? (another reason why i said use jubilee clips instead of straps to hold the tank on,coz their narrower)

Nice to see another "golden oldie" coming back to life.
