Gearbox Curry

Post by Dr.Lighthouse »

When I took the plug out of the gearbox,
the inside looked like curry sauce.

This is what I found inside:

Is this the famous gunge John mentioned on S.O.S. ?
Or is it 'over the top'? (what I fear it is)

The sprocket seems to be somewhat corroded,
can anyone please tell me if this will cause problems?

After some cleaning, it all looks a little bit better...

All advise is welcome !
Thanks!

Wonderful pic of a totally normal gearbox!!!

Heck this is my site and I have not got round to putting nice pics on like that, well done!

Check the teeth on the bevel gear, if they are too rounded off with corrosion, you may have a problem with gears coming out of mesh, especially if there is play in the bevel gear bearing or the thrust washer is not thick enough to ensure they mesh up. You can get thicker thrust washers... Just £1.00 a time!

With clean 140 oil and good gearbox gasket, it should be OK for another 15 hours use at least!

Regards,
John

Thank you, John, for your advise.

I feel a little embarred by your comments on the pics,
but knowing the expression 'a picture paints a thousand words',
I thought it would be easier to show than to describe...

Please feel free to copy the pics and use them whenever you like.

(btw: my kitchenfloor will need a good scrub after this...)

I bet it's not often that a photo like that is published on the web and brings forth comments like'normal' and 'nice'...
