Made another boat.
Made another boat today.
This picture is after 4 hours work.
Stitch and glue is is proving to be fast.
I hope to test it on the river tomorrow afternoon.
It is 11' 11 7/8" long with a 3' beam.
I have built it light and lean, lets hope it is quick.

Re: Made another boat.
Did not get it in the water today, ran out of resin
Could have done with a couple more inches on the sides at the widest beam.
Was restricted to 1220 mm of ply to play with. Should have bought another sheet.
It is very light at this stage, my 7 year old daughter helped me move it with no problem.
I will need to add seats and possibly frames to make it more rigid.

Re: Made another boat.
That's experience for you, nice looking and very quickly built.
Will you keep us informed how it acts in the water, this is what I'm hoping to achieve over the winter. With some little extra fancy decor work hopefully.
Did you make this off the top of your head or did you use plans, I know you said before you didn't have plans for other boats you made.
Will you add any bouyancy under the seats?

Re: Built in Boyancy
1. A ply and glass box that does not leak is buoyant. There are many boats on the market that have in-built buoyancy of that type.
As I have said before, In my opinion in a collision most of the damage will be in the first couple of feet of the bow section. If you make this area separate then you must increase your chances of not sinking.
You could fill the closed off bow section with milk bottles if you don't want to spend £15 on foam. Or use any other closed cell buoyancy aid, Charles L favours bubble wrap.
If the damage to the hull is outside the bow section then a buoyant bow should prevent total loss of the boat and engine.
2. Marine grade 2 part foam from my supplier works out at about £5.00/cubic foot. 1 Cubic foot will support 27Kg in water.
So 3 cubic feet will float the boat, engine and other bits.
Sheathed in glass cloth, makes it a bit more rigid.
Soon be testing.

Yes pete, the ply was joined using butt blocks. This time I used polyurethane glue just to see how easy it is to use.
The glass cloth is 80gms/sqm, very thin but should offer some protection.

Re: Made another boat.
Not quite, finished the outside and spent too much time on the lathe.
Colder weather does slow it up a bit.
Will chuck it in the local river after work tomorrow.

What's the verdict on the new boat, I assume it's now floating on water!
I notice when laying the cloth over the hull there's excess at the bow, however the finished job looks neat, can you explain how you make a nice finish like that? Is it cut along the bow or what?

Re: Made another boat.
It rained all day today so it is almost floating.
Won't be long. If it dry tomorrow afternoon I will try and float it and post pics. I have been working on the latest engine which is using up my spare time.
As for the cloth, any excess just cut it off and overlap the edges.
Did try and buy a set of bathroom scales at the boot sale this morning, so that I could weigh it. But could not find any.

Re: Made another boat.
They do moan these women
The cold weather has slowed down the resin, final coat still tacky.
Sheds all full.
Turn up the heating, stick boat in back room.
What do you mean it stinks, just get on with your piano practice.

As a moderator Outboard I'm forced to say that comment is completely out of order!

Re: Made another boat.
Just weighed it, and it came out at 27.4KG.
Not that bad for a 12 foot boat.
