Saving Old Seagulls

I have been asked by several overseas Seagullers to help them locate the necessary BSF spanners so that they can work on their motors without damaging all the tight nuts & bolts.

I have tried for several years to locate the 5/16 BSF 85 degree offset open ended spanner that Seagull issued all their outboard assemblers to tighten the nuts at the top of the drive shaft tube, only to be told that no one has made them for 40 years.

Well I've found someone with them but to get them, I have to buy 100.
Bit of a show stopper!
So I decided to build a tool kit for Seagulls.

It will contain :-

1 King Dick 5/16 & 1/4 BSF open ended spanner both ends with 85 degree offset, Chromed (new old stock).

1 Williams Superslim 1/4 BSF combination spanner, 1 end open 1 end ring, Chromed, (New).

1 Williams Superslim 5/16 BSF combination spanner, 1 end open 1 end ring, Chromed, (New).

1 Tipco 2 BA & 4 BA open ended spanner, Chromed (new old stock).

All of the above items are forged from Chrome Vanadium Steel, though the new old stock ones might show the odd mark, from being stored for the last 40 years.

I will be selling the tool kits on Ebay in the very near future for a buy me now price of £17.00 plus post & packing.

If any of the members or readers of this site wish to purchase one they are available to you for £16.00 plus post & packing, I don't have to pay Ebay fees to John.

As you can imagine I have a huge amount of money tied up in spanners & would like some of it back before I'm faced with the Christmas expenditure.
So if any of you are interested in any of the surplus 83 remaining kits, drop an Email to Charles at (tonimarr(at)aol.com), I now have to work out how much 100 jiffy bags are going to cost me & how many stamps I'm going to have to buy.

I will post them anywhere in the world at whatever it costs, though if you want to pay via paypal, I might have to increase the postal charges to

To the UK First Class £1.25 using paypal £2.50
To europe First Class £2.40 using paypal £3.65

Last time I looked for taps & dies, a 1/4 BSF die was £27.00 +VAT a tap set is usually more expensive than a die.
You could be over £150.00 for the 2 sizes that makes a replacement 40+ cheaper than a couple of broken studds.

Check old British motorcycle mechanics tool boxes they used BSF as well

Sounds great, particularly the 80 degree offset. That'll sort the problem of crankcase to driveshaft casing tube bolts. I've sworn at many of those, and you've done well to assemble that kit at that price.

Please will you bring me a kit down - I believe you're down here next week?

Sorry Colin I work in the engineering industry & only price stuff on a professional quality basis, I never thought about tools for cleaning a few threads ever year.

Charles - thanks so much for doing this..Ill sign up for two kits please (Ill contact you on EM for details)

If anyone on the East Coast wants one, we might save some money doing a single international shipment and then breaking up for local shipment on this side..Ill be willing to do this for 5-10 units if there is interest...

Thoroughly recommended - the offset spanner is just the job, I rushed down to the workshop to try it, it'll make a big difference.

Went to see the other Charles today to drink his tea & admire his Seagulls.

For a small reward I might give a detailed description & the serial number of his beach found century (very early model looks just like a 102), he's got some cracking just post war motors, no wonder he knows so much about them.

I have just taken deliver of the 1/4 BSF combination spanners I was waiting for, Thursday 16th November.

The first of the promised sets will be posted first class on Monday.

If any of you out there want to give them a real hard test drive, I have several Seagulls waiting to be restored.

I got one of the first 'editions' from Charles, and can only say everyone should get a set. The 85 degree spanner revolutionises removal of the back nut from the drive leg, where I was forever trying to come up with cunning solutions for this nut. Good for those of us blessed with Villiers ignitions as well! Rick
