Water Cooled Villiers

Yes,found this Marlin 5Hp motor with a water cooled Villiers 5F as the prop turner. Moving can be fun indeed Charles.
The Marlin is Australian and they made an 18Hp twin as well but with their own power head.
It says on its plate that made in England. I can find no record of such a thing. It is radically different design.
Very smooth runner.

Hey Bruce you are going to find all sorts of things whilst you are moving
Could this be a Villiers block made in England, with a bespoke water cooled cylinder added for this particular outboard manufacturer? The block could have been fitted by Marlin?

Could be but the plate says England 5F, that is the strange part. If the engine was a hybrid, it would have been sourced from Norton-Villiers Ballarat for convenience.

Bringing an old you back to life lol
Via a contact who has access to Villiers information, I can confirm that the 5F was supplied to the Marlin Outboard and Watercraft Company with air-cooled barrel and cooling fan. This implies that the water-cooled barrel and custom flywheel were being added by the MOWC, but we're yet to determine who the OEM of these components is eg were they designed and manufactured by the MOWC, design by MOWC and manufactured by others, or designed and manufactured by others.
The 2nd of the above mentioned options makes the most sense, but will require further research to confirm.

Looks like 2012 pics went away with the server problems shortly after..............
Replacements.
Both motors test fired OK when I received them SO long ago.
One of the motors has an air cooled head...........makes attaching the lower cowl an impossible task.

Thank you for the Mk 5F photos.
I have only heard of one other Mk 5F which was on eBay For Sale last June, and it was Engine No. 794A/771.
Do I read yours correctly as 794A/800 ??
The only information I have on Mk 5F is from correspondence from a friend, and I have paraphrased in places:-
"- The Mk 5F, 50mm Bore x 50mm Stroke with Capacity of 98cc, had magnesium castings and chrome-plated bore to resist wear, and a rotary inlet valve. It was rated at 4HP (or 5HP at Peak) and was used primarily on the Danarm Fury chainsaw from 1954 - 59, also on some Go-Karts.
- The Marine version was fitted with a Villiers S12 carburettor and Recoil Starter.
- Spec 318X and Spec 409X (Ballaarat manufacture) were sold to Marlin Outboards with Villiers S12 carby and P/No D245AU recoil starter. The Cylinder, Cylinder Head and Inlet Pipe were supplied by Marlin."
Hope some of this is of interest.
What information are you actually looking for on the Mk 5F ??

Something to add to my last email on Mk 5F:-
Spec 318X and 409X supplied to Marlin Outboard with Villiers S12 Carburetter, Control Cable 3’ 1" and D245AU Recoil Starter Assembly.-------Cylinder , cylinder head , inlet pipe, fan, silencer, fuel tank, fuel pipe, fuel tap supplied by purchaser .

Thanks Bruce, your info pretty well stacks up against mine. Interesting to note your serial numbers (at least the one I can read anyway) does not match the 318X or 409X assigned to Marlin by Villiers Ballarat. This would imply at least one of yours is very early or before a usage pattern was established.
May discuss more with you.
