Howdy: restoring my first 40+. Noticed a 1mm wobble in the lower edge of the magneto. This prompted me to apply a run out gauge to the top of the crankshaft. Looks to be out by 20 thou.
Put a pipe on it and brought it back to about 5 thou. Still have a variation in magneto lower edge gap a
Which tells me it is out too. No play felt in crankshaft.
Wondering what is normal for these units? Would rather not suffer the expense of replacing it. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Re: Crankshaft runout
Have straightened quite a few, including later needle roller crank, works OK.
Bit harder if they are twisted.
Re: Crankshaft runout
Sadly, couldn't get the flywheel/magneto off the shaft so im stuck with attempting a straightening with the engine assembled. Just checked run out at top of shaft with plug out, turning flywheel. 5 thou will have to do for now. We will see how she runs when my other parts come in.
Guess a bit of wobble adds character.
Full top end teardown this winter...if I can get the mag off.
Thanks for the comment.
