Saving Old Seagulls

Even though I said "I wasn't going to buy any more motors until I'd made some space by selling some", I broke my new years resolution or was it the year before lasts.

I bought one of these.

Not this Evinrude Zephyr but a less shiny one from 1940/41, I just couldn't help myself, a 5.4 hp, 4 cylinder, 160cc outboard, that I can carry.

Very nice , you don't often get the chance of one of those . You can sell off ' surplus stock ' anytime

It's a bit embarrassing when you compare the level of engineering technology in an American outboard costing $127 with the UK equivalent in 1939.

A Marston OP cost $150.!

I had a firm rule nothing American then you see a Sea Fury looking at you from the corner of a shelf, then there's another behind it.

Then you notice a couple of Clarkes have snuck in, that only need a little bit of work, but hardly take up any room, & your still lusting for a 20H, then you realise a Zephyr has crept past the oath you made & your doomed!

$127.50, still cheap compared to a Marston.

Perhaps we now need to have an Evinrude Thames meet, could make it Johnson Evinrude, last one to the pub buys the beer, that will hurt you Charles.

I look forward to seeing this motor. My Grandfather ran a bigger 4 cylinder Yank motor during the war in the Belgian Congo, his chauffeur would ride in the boat if they decided not to go by car.

The Evinrude Zephyr doesn’t get much respect in Canada or the United States. It has an undeserved reputation of being complicated and difficult to get running. Being the smallest (North American) production four cylinder outboard earns my respect. Plus it will push a boat nicely. You made the right choice. The Zephyr is deserving of a place in any outboard collection.
