British Seagull 2 models

Post by AlainL »

Hello, last week I bought these 2 British Seagulls here in Belgium. Their SN are: SD1389P3 and THCL479D4. They stood in a shed for years. Yesterday I started cleaning up the SD-model. Are there things to pay attention to ? Greeting, Alain.

Welcome aboard Alain.

Well done in getting these as both are very worthy indeed.

First thing is use the search function and importantly...DO NOT use power tools.

Gently gently by hand...

Especially very aged Gulls.

You will be fine.

Keep posting your endeavour aye.

Look like great motors, good find.

Do you want to get them running again? Or just cleaned up?

Hello, after removing the bronze flywheel nut, shouldn’t the flat cover simply come loose ? Here it remains very stuck to the flywheel as if sealed … Many thanks for tips. Gtz, Alain.

Yes the stator pulley plate (piece that a rope wraps around) and the flywheel cover plate should come off after removing the main nut. They’re often stuck on with crust on older motors like yours.

Stator pulley plate should come off easily enough and is a sturdy piece. But the flat cover plate below is thin and prone to damage; recommend removing gently.

Some penetrating oil and a few gentle taps around the rim might free it up.

Hello

Hereby a picture of the points of my SD Wartime model. Is it correct that the points stay open while turning the flywheel exect for only 1 moment ? Shouldn’t it be just the opposite: always closed and only opening just once and than giving a spark ?

THNX for your reply !

The points open to create the spark. The rest of the time they should be closed.

If you look at the inside of your flywheel you will see the cam (egg shaped centre) that causes the points to open & close.

If you remove this cover & the spark plug & get somebody to film the points with a mobile phone while you slowly rotate the flywheel by hand you will be able to make a reasonable estimate of how much of a revolution the points stay open!
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.
