Re: 40 PLUS WON'T RUN 'FLAT OUT'

Thanks for the advice fellas, will drag her out at the weekend and stick her in the wheelie bin. The only problem with the 'timing' suggestion is I thought it was fixed. I like the idea about the choke will give it a go. The seriel no indicates 1972.

40 PLUS WON'T RUN 'FLAT OUT'

Hi, recently took my 40+ to Lake Garda for use on my small inflatable. Engine starts great, and seems to run fine, but the last quarter of an inch of throttle makes the engine die. Reducing the throttle again makes her pick up and at this setting will run all day. The needle in the carb is for 10:1 ...

Cleaning out steel tanks

Hello Mark

I cleaned mine back to bright metal by filling about 1/3 full of pea gravel (imperiel size not metric!) and about a pint of white spirit. I then bunged up all the holes with wooden dowels, wrapped in lots of dust sheets and propped it in a cement mixer (with the tank across the mixer in ...

Not according to John. He says for that era of tank the decal he supplied is correct. I think its a bit of a grey area myself because its just on the borderline where decals changed to just saying 'SEAGULL' across the back. Either way it still looks good

If you let me have your email adress I will ...

I have just renovated a silver cent plus 1977, which has black steel tank which now looks superb. resplendant with its new decal suplied by John. If kept clean and full to the brim with fuel over the winter months to stop condensation should give years of service. The unfortunate thing with the ...

Brass Tanks

I posted a message a while ago about seperating the end caps from brass tanks. Many people replied to this topic. It seems to be that many people have tried it without success. Well I can say I have achieved it!

Removing dents from tank end caps seems to be bain of every discerning guller. The ...

Whilst channel hopping last night, I came across the film 'The Bodygaurd' with Kevin youno and Whitney whatever and although I tried to change it before the wife spotted it alas I was too late. So There I was quietly nodding off when a scene came on, anyone who has seen the movie will know the one I ...

40+ big end

Hello Andy,

trouble is after stripping it down everything fell apart so im not sure the shells are in the right way round. Will have to check/ try different combinations. I take it the scews should be tight.
The wire I have is a very thin piano wire, but your suggestion of wreath making wire would ...

40+ big end

Anyone out there any ideas on reassembly of 40+ big end. When I stripped the motor all I can remember is that the two retaining scews were tight and took some shifting. On reassembly with the screws tight the crank is very difficult to turn. Should the screws be backed off slightly as this seems to ...

siezed seagulls !

A few weeks ag I got my hands on a 40plus which was siezed solid. I tried soaking in diesel for a couple of weeks but after much hammering with a brass drift could not shift it. I stripped down the motor until all I had left was the cylinder with the piston/conrod left in it. This enabled me to ...

Tank Decals

Hello John.

As mentioned It was the steel tank. You sent me some decals and a load of other stuff for the motor about a week ago, all that I requested was there - excellent service!

I suppose the method of cleaning the inside of the tank would work just the same with brass tanks, providing all ...

Brass Tanks

Cheers Steve, certainly sounds tricky. Hopefully going to get hold of a forty+ which is not in running order (seized) and the tank on this is well mashed. Will be great to have a practice on, with nothing to lose. Getting heat on it from all sides would be the key.

Just been re-assembling my silver ...

Brass Tanks

Thanks to all parties for all your advice. Seems to have stirred up a hornets nest. If there was an easy way of removing dents I suppose it would be on John's site. Still I'm always up for a challenge!

Working with silver solder is something I have had some if little experience. My recollection is ...
