Saving Old Seagulls

I had a similar problem of intermittant water flow on my 40+, the water supply tube from the impellor to the head had come loose, a quick tighten and all was well.

Personally i wouldn’t strip down just yet, ease the studs around the joint on the crank case. Scrub clean the joint and smear with clear silicone or instant gasket leave to semi set and then tighten the nuts try that. If all else fails you may have to strip it!

If I loosen the 4 studs, will I be ...

...on my last but one trip out with my 40+, I noticed oil and bubbles leaking out of the crankcase joint by the tiller.

On my return i tightened the four bolt as much as I dared, but on my last trip out it was still leaking. Albeit a tad less.

Could you learned Gents give me a blow by blow account ...

I was thinking the exact same thing...maybe you just lean it like a motorcycle.

...all sorted, split the drive unit off and the water delivery pipe retaining nut had come undone and the tube was loose inside the exhaust.

All assembled, new gearbox oil...it's now pumping water like a fire engine, even at just above idle.

Thanks for the help guys, as soon as the manual arrives and I can see where to split the gearbox and where the water pump is, I'll give it a go.

...I took my '72 40+ longshaft out for it's first spin on the water today behind my little glass 10 footer, and it stopped pumping water every now and then.

It ran to the point it was only blowing steam and I would stop the old girl, wait a minute then restart and she would be fine for another ten ...
