first of all as a new member hi to you all, i have just become the proud owner of a forty plus11,it comes with original crate, some paperwork,ie operaters manual,and parts book; in old school, l.s.d,it is in first class condition and runs so sweet, it has hardly any use and even still has the 8 com plug,it came from someone who,s dad stored it away for many years, it seems to have been laid up correctlyas it was well coated with oil with the eception of some light rusting on the head bolts,with a little cleaning of the carb and points it started 1st pull, anyhow to put a value on this what would i expect if i was to put it up for sale, i only need it as a backup as my main is a 60hp yam, cheers ste

Without seeing a picture of the motor and crate, its not a question that can be answered.
If its in a greenish crate and off ebay, that has already been talked about on here, then its just a motor in a box.
Some will pay good money for original in the box motors, but some are just a seagull in a box.

so what you say it is a matter of oppinion, or preference, as it goes i dont want to sel it just curios of its value, if i ever need to use it for wich i bought it would be priceless

What I am saying is, if it is in the original box it is not so common and therefore collectable, but if it is not it is just a seagull. In that case it is only worth what the seagull is worth and if it is priceless you had better hang on to it!

Perhaps a photo or two would help here.

Forty Plus motors seem to sell on Ebay quite readily, the price is subject to all sorts of influences, including willingness to post or deliver.

If you do post a photo please let us have one of the box too.

The price looks ludicrous until you do the conversion, then it just looks expensive.

That's a genuine seagull box. There were several versions over the years,I have had two forties in their boxes, both different, both original.

Here's one of mine..

This one's from a Forty Plus, early seventies I'm told. The boxes were recycled - each one had a refund ticket stapled to the inside and the customer sent this off for a refund. The boxes were sturdy and made to last.

BUT - (big but!) many of them were made of untreated wood, so if you get one have a very close look at it for woodworm. If it has little holes in it get it treated or do it yourself, because the pesky little buggers will migrate to live in the timbers of your garage/shed/workshop.

As I said in the earlier post there was more than one style - another of mine (long gone) was made of panels in a frame rather than simple planks. That was for a Forty Plus, too, and it had the motor in it, which belonged to a Squadron Leader in the RAF. That one had rope handles at each end, and the British Seagull Poole stencils as well as a refund ticket thing, which I wish I had kept.

Many 102s were sent out in large boxes which held two motors. A bit too much for one man, or at least a bit too much for me.

The boxes don't have huge value, because everyone would like the original box for their engine. Until they acquire one, than it becomes a pain to store and even more of a pain to pack up and take out. But they do keep the muck and paint splashes off the engines, which may mean a better preserved cosmetic condition.

very nice engine!thanks for the info at least i know i have an engine in a box, although it all seems to be original, and as i said it hasnt had much use . i will post some pics asap will get it out and try today. it does need a good clean etc, most of the bolts have a little rust with being stored a light spray of wd 40 and a stiff brush should sort it, i am reluctant to strip anything to clean as it runs sweet as, cheers for the inputat least i didnt pay too much for it,lol
