Fly wheel 'play'

Post by Seaduck »

My motor runs beautifully.
Nothing catches, binds or grinds and I am happy with it as it is... But, I have noticed the flywheel can be lifted slightly by about 1.5mm.
I know this is the end float and it should have a little movement... but how much is too much?

I just checked my 2 seagulls.(40-plus and century 100) both of them have the same amount of end play as what yours. Also checked my nieghbours 40-plus, His has got the same as well.

I've got two that have about 5mm play in both and they run fine, both the same model.

Both my 40+'s have quite a bit of movement when you lift the flywheel, I haven't measured it but it's a couple of mm's for sure. I hadn't noticed it until 2 days ago when I finally got round to tidying up my 76 model that needed the tank and flywheel repainted. I noticed said play in the flywheel while working on it and thought at first it was a problem, a quick comparison to my known low hour model revealed an identical amount of play, so I assume this is normal and how they came from the factory.

British Seagull Service Sheet No.1 states in paragraph 6 - 'Noticeable crankshaft vertical end play is essential' .
