The Addiction Continues!

Post by joe28 »

I can see this being like me and Jeeps, old bikes, pitiful sailboats!
I HAD 2 Centuries at the beginning of last spring as a trolling motor (I figured if 1 is good, 2 must be better, keeping one for a spare)!
The ran great, re rung one "just to see what's inside".
The problem I had was setting them up on my boat, trying to get that sweet amount of exhaust in the water AND still have the steering linkage to the 'Rude 70, (my main pusher). No matter how I did it. it just didn't work.
I gave up bought a 5 HP 4 stroke Honda.
Had a offer to sell both, (a rare offer, I actually MADE $$ on the sale).
But the Sea Gull bug was still in me.
Flash the end of the summer.
I see a 15' "Glen-L wooden sailboat for sale, poor thing!.
It NEEDED a good home, so home she came with me.
"I need a small light weight gas motor, hmmmmm, I know just what kind.
Ebay was the answer!
I JUST got the "Glen Pusher"
It's a July 1987 Forty Plus with a clutch and CDI ignition
Your thoughts on this bad boy?
What to look for, what to keep and eye out for on eye on?
Joe
Just give into it, it's easier that way!

A 40 plus with a clutch is a usefull motor to have in your collection.

What to look out for:
As with most seagulls, internal corrosion in the waterways will be an issue at some point. As you've already worked on a century before, a 40 should be a walk in the park. The same basic principles apply for both motors.
Electronic ignitions will either work or they wont! (make sure it works first before you do anything else to it) John can offer an exchange ignition unit if yours is suspect.
Other than that, use it often. This way you'll get to know all its eccentricities. Frequent use will soon tell you what's wrong with the motor.
Gearboxes require good quality oil. Perhaps not so much of a problem with 40 plus with clutch as these gearboxes seem to hold onto their oil for longer.
Still worth checking the oil level every 15 hours or so just to be sure.
Clean everything on the motor. i.e the entire fuel system before you decide on it's maiden voyage. Dont forget the small filters in the fuel tap and the banjo fitting either.

Help is always on hand. Just ask.
We like pics by the way. :P

Jon

ps i gave into it years ago and am now rapidly running out of space  (hopeless really this collecting nonsense)

Tanks!
I have long sense given up trying to resist these types of things!
I figure my credit cards need a good working out each month!
What stopped my multiple bikes and Jeeps was the cost of the license plates and the insurance!
I haven't even started the motor yet, (First thing I did after un-boxing it was check for spark, then the lower unit to see if the oil was milky- nope sealed up good, looked like used oil too, which is even better!!), and I already called a supplier in San Fran for a long list of parts, that look iffy.
A trip the the car wash after work to pressure wash all the dirt off it, clean water ports and them see if it makes noise and smoke!

Is there a limit to the "good stuff" a man can collect over his life? 8)
