Plus 40 with a clutch- how does this work?

The motor is there and I'm STUCK here at wirk, (for some reason they frown onm me working on my boats HERE at work!? I'm here..... isn't THAT enough)?
I got it the yesterday, delivered from E Bay.
I pressure washed it, made a list of parts that look "iffy" and ordered.
Quick look at the clutch system last night has me baffled.
I see it moving, but can't grasp HOW it makes connection without grinding gears???
I understand you got to idle it down, slip it in.
does it just "slide in" or do you hold the lever until it engages?
How does it engage i the lower unit?
I look @ on the net for a pic or? but, found nothing, (I think it has to do with the "British to American" termonolgy !

It's a simple dog clutch. The gear wheel is always engaged and spins on a shaft that can move forwards or backwards. On the shaft is a dog and on the gearwheel is a dog. When you lift the clutch lever up, the shaft slides and the shaft dog engages on the gearwheel dog, thus providing the drive. Always reduce the revs before engaging gear to avoid damaging the dogs.

After searching @ on line and finding a dog clutch on E bay and later my parts book arriving I see how simple it is!
This is what I LOVE about B.SG.! No spinning clutch assy., no springs, levers tinnie, tiny pieces to fly off and land under the bench in the mass of old metal savings and grease to be lost for ever, just a simple moving dog clutch and a slide dog clutch!
Why can't the rest of the world be this easy?!

Maybe it's true, I can't adjust to "modern times", but like B.SG., I just keep prodding along!
