Nippled box with end plate on SD though it could be an early AD box as has no clutch.

Believe so. SDP's were direct drive, they seem scarce.

The shims position the crown wheel in relation to the pinion, when the crown wheel is bearing against the end of the cap.

I am making some for my SD at the moment, yesterday on its first outing it ran very well but the gearbox failed to mesh correctly.

I have measured the gap between the crown wheel and the cap bearing when the gears are fully engaged and it is 37 thou, so I will make a 25 thou shim as I would think the gears do not want to be run fully meshed.

Niander you missed a great day yesterday, of the three engines that I took H.I.D broke the one she was using, the one I was using stopped working and the SD would not mesh ( both of my boats being towed at the same time raised a few smiles :D).

RBT you'll have to borrow Timberland's boat, he pulled 4 of us boats along the Thames at the speed limit, & didn't even break into a sweat!

The Thames is a proper river, not a Cornish creek.

Christmas

Mind you - look up the Fowey tide times and we could have a bet on the likely date . . .

When did you last get stuck (until the next tide) on the mud on the Thames?
