Aluminium Brazing or Repair.

Post by Collector Inspector »

There are some of you that have used the Al. brazing rods with some good results but what do you reckon would be the go if I attempted to fill/repair or said braze the B'Jesus out of a corroded water jacket.

Pics show one reasonable Anzani Head on the left and one New one on the right.

New heads are not to be wasted so I do all sorts to retrieve what presents.

Can I puddle the melt with these rods?

Minor Anzani problem (Pun Intended) as heads are weakest link.

Should I give it a go with a REALLY crap one first?

I can't see enough corrosion in those pics to merit a repair Bruce, it's only a pilot,
is it leaking water anywhere?

Yes Charles, it does externally. See the close up pic......

I would normally spend pleasant hours with layer apon layer of careful Devcon work then grind and shape and face the head surface.

Just wondering if the brazing rods would be worth a go is all.

It is Super Single actually.

You have got me thinking though with Pilot reference as early Pilots went from a cooled jacket head to a "Hot Head" with minimal water heat transfer and external fins a bit like a Gull. The pilot heads with cooling failed straight away so that is how they solved the problem for them...............

I have a cunning Plan...............

It's not a pilot, it's a Anzani Super Single there should be plenty of them floaying around over here.

If anyone has one that's in resonable condition, PM me, I've promised CI that I'll post him as many as I can find, as they seem to be scarce in Australia.

CI
Twostrokenut has one that's on it's way to me, once he gets it off I'll wait a couple of weeks to see if any more turn up, then I'll stick what I have in the post.

PS you owe him a cold tinny, he drinks in the Rose & Crown & want's it delivered.

yes its good stuff but the rule is to do it twice ..wire brush ..wet the surfaces and then wire brush again and finish off he job ..I use it for lugs broken off castings ...
That one I woud drill a small hole from the outside and make it a bit funnel shaped ...brush ..wet ..brush whilst hot and fill again

Thanks for all the help guys!

Charles, you are a Gem Mate and Andy, I reckon there is a way to provide a pint or four for your help as well. I will be in touch re that.

I am going to give the brazing a go following the other usefull tips on the worst piece of whats left of a head in my boxes of “Maybe Not Bad Enough To Toss” box..

Regards

Bruce.

PS: If they were personally delivered, it would never get there intact. We call them “For The Trip” or “Roadies”
