CRANK

Post by James MACK »

As some of you already know I broke the shaft on my featherweight(long story)I got a replacement shaft ,fitted it ,then found the woodrift key to be 90 degrees out so its impossible to adjust points (wipac).Any suggestions.

If the Woodruff key is 90° from the position on the old shaft the flywheel is shifted round by 90° also and that will put the timing out.
To get the timing right you will also have to rotate the magneto base-plate by 90°, then you will be able to access the points as previously.
You'll have to make a new locating dimple for the base-plate securing screw at the new location

The snag might be where the HT lead connection ends up.

Bit of a ball ache but obtain the correct crank? Look on the bright side; it will strip down easier and quicker next time......

Just turn round the back plate...ignore the dimple!
i had to do this with one of mine....i turned the back plate about 180 degrees off the dimple ...then nipped up the screw and it ran i then simply adjusted the back plate ..as it was running to obtain the smoothest running. the engine...actually a 102 power head now runs fine...don't see why you cant do this with yours also
ps ...once you have found the correct position you could take it all off again and then drill a new dimple hole in new correct position but i haven't bothered as yet

Taken a look at my Featherweight. On that the base plate could be turned 90° one way Ok I think but if turned the other way the block would be in the way of the HT connection.

I took Vic's advice and turned the base plate . It ran when first tryed now trying to start then dying . I know they dont have timing marks but I might have to invent some .By that I mean mark it turn it slightly as in advance /retard.Will let you know how I get on.Been on holiday this week and managed to pick up a 40+ for £75 thats me got 3 when's the next meeting of seagulls anonymous.

James the 40 + timing mark is 115 degrees before the century one.

This will be a bit difficult to measure, so a fraction less than 1 & a third right angles should be close enough.
