Engine code- anyone got any ideas? FP 255 ICI

Post by mr-dan-dan-dan »

Just got this at a car boot for a tenner! A winter project i think.
" FP 255 ICI " All I can make out from the engine code is that it is a forty plus standard shaft 67-79.
255th made? surely not. From the ID page, I thought they didn't use "I"'s in the codes?? I've got two, whoohoo! :D (doesn't work like that does it... )
This is seagull number two now, got a featherweight as well.
A lot of the fixings are pretty corroded , needs a new tank and fuel line but it turns over fine and has a spark. can't be bad can it.

Perhaps it reads FP 2552 C1 which would make it a March 1971 40+.
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

I like that nom de plume, very dramatic!
Its definitely that code to my eyes. the "I"s have top and bottom bars. Or is that how '1's looked?
I've just worked out how to do pics: Image

Maybe someone got a bit 'friday afternoon' at the factory and made a mistake? too busy thinking about getting a spacehopper for christmas back in '71.

Hello All, Dan's FP has the classic letter 'I' instead of the number '1'.

No idea why Seagull did this, but most of the motors about this time were numbered the same way, with a letter 'I' for the '1'.

Now, Have you seen the new page???

We have been keeping this under wraps for a while now, whilst Brendan has been grappling with it. There will still be hiccups I'm sure, especially if we put 'I's in for '1's, but once the owner has figured that...

Try it and let us know, see the link here on the forum, the home page or the I.D. your Seagull page.

Let us know what you think.

Regards,
John
