does the rotor actually sit on the jointing plate :?

no...... the distance between the bottom of the rotor and the top of the gasket should be about 1/16"

According to Service Sheet No.9 up to 1/16" clearance is correct.

purchased a new rotor from john, water not to great stripped her down noticed that the rotor had came down on top of the jointing plate,definitely had it set 1/16th above the plate struggle getting it back to where it should be,are these prone to working down, also if its done it once i can only guess it will happen again.
