Hi just won an auction on a Carby; I think it will work, does it look OK to you?

It does look like it was a mower carb, the only reason I say that is the spring around the cable, I see that all the time on mowers but never on a seagull.
I don't know about model numbers, but most seagull ones I have seen are V508C/1, it maybe an older model, Its in good condition, so its still worth having if it was cheap enough.
Throttle lever is a pretty standard Villiers one.

The price was right, 23.80 in your British Pounds including postage!
It looks in good condition in the photos; it will replace the badly pitted and stripped banjo thread one I have.

Thats a mower carb alright. There is no difference between that and a seagull carb.It should have a 25-1 needle on it as well. I have a villiers reel mower carb on my 40-plus that works good. The throttle lever and cable should be the wright combo as well.It should be able to go to full throttle on the lever, and wont over stretch the cable to breaking point, Here is a pic of what i done to mine. I slid a piece of fuel line over the carb end of the cable to clear the cable from the flywheel. Cable looks ok. If you want you could slide a length of heat-shrink over the cracked bit of outer casing, and it will look like new again.

Yes mower carb, I use both and all parts are the same. The seagull version usually has a hole in the side of the float chamber to help avoid any flooding issues and also allowing fuel to drain out when the motor is laid down. This stops having stale fuel in the carburetor if left for long periods of unuse.

The choke flap on seagulls doesn't have the knurled knob just a hole and the flap has a hole to lean out at full choke to aid in less fiddly starts on the water.

The seagull version is also painted silver. The carburettor castings are a high zinc casting as is the points housing and as such make good anodes and can usually be seen corroded if the motor has had high salt water use. The paint gave further protection from the water.
Float chambers were steel and plated, later ones black plastic.

The brass centre piece is stamped on top where the needle enters, some mowers run a different number but seagulls seem to change about too. As long as they run ok don't worry too much. Pull and check the needle number as this can vary, usually 2,3 or 21/2 but there are others too.

I have also found that the spigot size can vary and have had to machine it to fit the motor so don't force it if it's tight, they do break.

Could also possibly be off an Atco Boatimpellor which used the spring-on cable-fitting. The throttle lever will have 'Villiers' stamped on the upper plate and was also standard on the Impellors.

I assume the inlet cover is missing, but on the Atco's they used the type with a mesh screen as did the lawnmowers with Villiers carbs. Rick

Here is a pic of the inlet; I'm not near my Seagulls at the moment, but does the diameter look close enough?

I just measured one of my carbs and its the same as yours. 19mm. So no machining required. They are a tight fit. Or should i say they are like an interference fit. Spray a bit of WD-40 on the inlet horn of the engine, and a bit around the spigot part of the carb. And push down as you twist from side to side until it bottoms out. 8)
