Saving Old Seagulls

A bit off topic, as charlesp would say, but I melted the plastic handle to one our saucepans - which sat on the top of the lid, as a bar of plastic in a recess in the lid - by inattention, so I thought if I melted it off altogether with a blowtorch (Go System mixed butane propane, fine jet), then I could put on a screw thru the hole in the middle, with a knob on, as a replacement
Not knowing about tempering, I now have got the plastic off, but I left the torch too long on the stainless lid, part of which is now a nice blue colour. Can anyone help me - can I get the nice stainless colour back, and how do I do it?

Well it could be sanded off with 1000 or higher grit paper but then it would need to be polished. It was originally polished correct? Not sure which would be the most efficient polish to do the job on Stainless. Ideally you would need a few progressively fine polishing compounds and several buffing wheels. Messy job! Might be less of a hassle to buy a new one, unless you harbour desires to learn polishing.

Pickling paste for stainless pasivation available from welding supplies. Then polish with scotchbrite pad.

The set of copper bottomed stainless steel pans were a wedding present a long time ago, so have value to us, added to which it was my mistake that did it - as my wife says, quite rightly, if you look after well made things, they last a lifetime - which has a certain resonance in the light of my seagull enthusiasm.........

If you want a real shiny finish you will have to buff after pickling.
