SJP2497 Continued

Post by Collector Inspector »

Chasing the case leak.

The cases were sealed with RTV.

It did not work of course. Most of it I have to clean away from the inner. It has turned into a nasty pasty clingy film everywhere.

What came first........the RTV or the replacement block and piston I wonder.

1/2 hour on glass plate and all will be well just to make sure mating surfaces are good.

When did the exhaust stub come out with the "O" Ring?

Cheers

About the same time Seagull started to use RTV during assembly.
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

going by the 40 series motors in my flock, late 60's-early 70's.

i recently sold an FP from 1972 that had the O ring on the exhaust flange, also the model F i've got is mid 70's and that's got an O ring too.

No Hylomar S. I use the spray can version as a gasket sealer. I do not use the "Gasket Maker" in a tube ever.

Cases sealed as "I do" with Permatex #3.

My other choice is "Bond 3 or 4" but not for this case set. I tend to pick and choose depending.......

You just pipped me in saying a thank you to Jon re the years that the "O" ring exhaust stub came along. Many bumps and scratches for this Old Man but someone actually loved it before me...they just got a little off track with it.

All good now.

I am absolutely amazed at how much water weight this wee motor with this big prop can swirl around in the test tank!

It really rocked everything............ 8)

I have never had a 40+ running in the can before. Very Impressed. Moves more water than an Evinrude Fisherman 6 by far. The Fisherman was the last motor rebuild that I tested in the tank.

A few pics........................please congrat me on my new laminated 400 x 400 x 4mm flat glass................Outstanding and resilient to floating about in a shed when not in use. Hopefully aye?

The vid is interim. I will back off the needle 1/4 turn up and run tomorrow.

It is running on the same fuel left in the tank last year..........April?.........10:1

Looking at getting this on a rack ASAP so to clear away more Old Garage.

Final for SJP2497 shortly.

Just curious B as to why you havn't tried to source the correct cylinder for this old gent yet?
Didn't we have a conversation a while back about this?
Much loved motors often end up with later parts on them for some reason! Probably as a result of previous "make do and mend" efforts.

Your right B, the 40 plus motor HAS got a lot of grunt in it for a fairly small motor.
No wonder that BS made them by the thousands.

You should put a prop on the Evinrude 6 Bruce, then it might shift some water.

In my opinion the 40+ Seagull is miles away from a 6hp OMC twin.

Kingfisher would not touch a 6hp Evinrude.

Nice of course that you are correct in your statement H.A.

Thing is please re read and notice "water WEIGHT".

The tub had 140 litres in it about the same as the six.

The 40+ actually grabbed more weight and threw it about enough to move the tub. 140KG plus plastic mass.

The Evinrude six did not do that.................................it just frothed everything up.

Ran SJP2497 again today. It will do. It will be on a transom Donnelly River March long weekend.

The oil mix will be adjusted to minimise the usual mess of course.

I have underlined the word "Minimise" so that no one gets my goat with unrealistic oiling comments and 25:1 etc. Each motor has different fuel mixing requirements based on individual running needs/use of.

A day of use and it will not be so over oiled as this.

The above pic is 1/2 pole Flip orientation.

THAT'S BETTER! :P

Bridged or un-bridged exhaust port?

Might be worth taking the head off and clean out the usual inside...

looks good though..
Nice to get the motor back to how it should be.
With a low (ish) serial number as is yours, i reckon the spec is now pretty much spot on compared with other known models of similar vintage.

Let us know how it runs when it's finished
