waitara river seagull race
Did a 5 hour roadie on the weekend to join in with the waitara river seagull race. (
https://www.stuff.co.nz/taranaki-daily- ... tara-river
The best part of the day was getting a good start on every race and beating the host (Graham and Jan) at their own game.
Spent some good time with my son in the boat (we are the white boat in the front (the red boat is a 2.5 modified)
As the day went on the race had to move up river as it was getting choppy and some of the newer members where finding it tough going.

Re: waitara river seagull race
Thanks for posting , interesting link . Cool pictures . I see alot of competitors have added an extra piece to the anti cavitation plate .
Re: waitara river seagull race
Yes I do this also. by doing that we can run the engine a lot higher in the water with out the prop grabbing air (as much) the higher the engine the less drag it has = the faster you go.I see alot of competitors have added an extra piece to the anti cavitation plate
My self and my 13 year old sonHere are the overall results .

Re: waitara river seagull race
That's interesting , I have considered trying this to aid going astern in choppy conditions . I'm just reluctant to drill holes in an almost new engine for an experiment !

Re: waitara river seagull race
Replace the water pump gasket with a 3mm aluminium plate , make the holes the same size & location as the gasket, use RTV to seal it.
Make it giant to start with, you can always make it smaller.
I fold the wing tips down as a skeg/stiffener.

Can't say too much, those Kiwi racers are too sharp (hope that's not too racist, note I didn't say Kiwi Gentlemen that would have been gender something or other).
There're taking the family with them & winning races!

Re: waitara river seagull race
You have every chance to win a race with that boat. I may just have to drop my motor over the side first!
Maybe if you didn't fill it with sand from that tipper it might go better!

what gear box motor have you got? I will get a pic of my setup later for youI have considered trying this to aid going astern in choppy conditions

Re: waitara river seagull race
I have 2 seagulls to try on that boat , an ED 102 and a series 90 . I alternate between a Honda and a Tohatsu , both 6 hp four stroke for daily use . Because it's a displacement hull my top speed will be limited but on a good day I can achieve 6 knots with the 6 horse
Re: waitara river seagull race
So Im guessing you might get about 2~3 knots out of the seagull?
Pics of the "Pan" Has to be of the non stick type to work! As Charles said take the gasket out and put the pan in its place The white one is for the 20'er
