Again, good information there. I'm learning lots on here!

That cotton reel type part on the transom mount has one flat area where it contacts the shaft, so I guess it was kept at one spot.

I don't have access to a TIG, but I can certainly try brazing. I will definitely experiment extensively on scrap parts before deciding whether to do the job.. I do like to do things myself, where's the fun otherwise? :)

Braze is way harder than ally & a different colour & has a high zinc content so prone to oxidation, so talk to your local ally welder for advice.
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

If you can only braze then dont do it..... you wont be happy with the result. you will be better to just file down the rough spots.
